Panjwai, Kandahar, Afghanistan, known as the heart of the Taliban, the birthplace; and I am headed there. I had just said goodbye to my wife whom at this point I have been married to for 4 months, and was now on my way to a combat deployment. My emotions were all over the place. I knew that I have to be the strong soldier for my peers, the soldier my leaders can trust and depend on, but I am also the loving husband that had to say goodbye to his wife. Furthermore, I knew that this could quite possibly be the last time that I would ever see her. As battalion mortars we were set up on Forward Operating Base (FOB) Zangabad. It was 2011 and the only American troops here before us were Rangers in 2007. The first day that I pulled tower guard I counted …show more content…
We entered the first compound, it consisted of 2 small mud huts and 1 large grape hut in the middle of vast fields with mud walls on its perimeter. Our security consisted of staying relatively in our file and not pushing out because we knew of how many pressure plate IEDs were in the area. In addition to our security, we pushed the ANA out for an outer cordon perimeter. The clearing team went through and searched buildings and inspected the area and once it was clear we stepped off towards our next compound. As we were moving to the next compound, roughly at the halfway point of an open field, we took harassing fire from the southeast; determined to be 3 AKs using sporadic fire. I quickly returned fire, but the engagement did not last long. The patrol continued moving to the next compound that was located to the east about 400 m. This compound was a lot larger; it consisted of several medium to large walled buildings. We began clearing the compound only to find that there were only a few villagers. The rain started to come down extremely heavy, so we strong pointed inside of a building for roughly 30 minutes. As soon as we began to step off, one of the ANA shot into the sky right next to us for absolutely no

It took 10 days for MG Natonski’s joint task force to defeat the enemy forces and regain control of the city, killing or capturing over 3000 insurgents. They secured the main MSR highway 10, which helped support the overall MNF-I mission. The full spectrum joint task force pushed forcefully though the city with a high operation tempo to ensure the embedded enemies would be destroyed and unable to call in reinforcements. Isolation, integrated operations including use of information operations to shape the battle field and minimizing collateral damage shaped the battlefield for follow on stability operations. By minimizing collateral damage, the Iraqi view of U.S. forces changed dramatically.…

However, the reconnaissance mission failed to provide an accurate picture of the enemy. The US led attack was based on faulty intelligence. The Taliban were numbered between seven hundred to one thousand armed with heavy machine guns, mortars, a couple of artillery pieces, and rocket propelled grenades. The enemy was occupied in covered and concealed positions throughout the ridge line and mountains with pre-planned targets at critical locations of the battlefield for their mortars to engage. Once the battle began, the fighters declared a jihad resulting in a significant number of fighters entering from outside the valley to join the…

On 13 September 1951, as the Battalions started their movement up the Satae-ri valley; they came across heavy fire from the NKPA mortars and artillery located in both valleys. The fires were so heavy that they only made it to the base of the ridge before having to halt and dig in for the night. As the Soldiers continued to inch their way up the hill they sustained large amounts of casualties. At the start of the second week, Adams was no closer to taking the remaining two hills than he had been days earlier and requested his Regiment be relieved due to the number of casualties sustained, but BG de Shazo denied his request.6…

Straub, the article states that returning United States Soldiers are suffering from PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder while fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq and they are not getting the help they need. America launched Operation Enduring Freedom a month after the September 11th terrorist attack to overthrow the Taliban regime and destroy terrorist infrastructure in Afghanistan. For about two years only about 15,000–20,000 military personnel remained in Afghanistan, but recently the number of soldiers in Afghanistan has increased. It was a rainy morning in Seattle, and I wore my Army dress uniform. Stepping off the bus, I ran 100 yards to the entrance of the Airport. After I purchased my ticket and checked my bags, I headed to the bar. It was the time of the winter equinox, and I was headed home with my discharge in my duffle bag. I suppose I should have worn my civilian clothes, but I had been stateside six months, and the comradeship I experienced in Vietnam had yet to loosen its grip on me.…

The blue midnight sky was glistening with infinite stars that lay above my slanted head as I watched the twilight moon above me. Glancing down my hand, catching sight of the time gave me the realization that this was actually happening. Months of preparation, years of mental training and the day had come faster than ever. My mind and heart were trapped in the though and mission of protecting and defending my country, the country that gave me everything and was everything. I was 22, they call me Mailto Sonu with a passion of going into the military as a young child, and the curiosity filled in my head of what it would feel like to stand on the rusty, rough, and coarse sand.…
