It seemed hilarious seeing Pa do women’s work. Every time that I walked by Pa when he was doing women’s work, I used every ounce of my strength to hold myself back from laughing. I wasn’t laughing anymore when I soon realized that someone would be forced to do the men’s work, which Pa used to do. Unfortunately, that someone was me. If I listed everything I was forced to do, I would fill up this entire page. So, I will let you imagine what I did instead. Though, I will say this: on cold winter days, I’d do my chores sunup to sundown. Many times my legs ached and my arms were so sore and

The sun’s burning rays beat down on us as we dug through the layers of Egyptian sand and rock. We had only begun the excavation the previous day and had already uncovered one-fifth of the ancient pyramid. I, as well as a team of high-ranking archaeologists, had accompanied Sarah Parcak in an expedition to unearth a lost Egyptian pyramid. “How’s your section of the chamber coming along, Erica? We’ve just uncovered a new sarcophagus,” remarked Sarah as she passed by, carrying a large coffin.…

Every girl growing up has someone she loves at first sight; someone that instantly becomes a huge part of her life. When I say love at first sight, it’s not always about a lover. It can be someone you are just absolutely infatuated with, or a role model. I was fortunate enough to find a role model who truly makes me feel like an important piece to the puzzle of life. That role model is Jill Cochran, PhD, APRN-FNP.…

In the discombobulation of day to day life, all types of people are going to try to knock you down. This hardship was experienced personally by Brenda Roza as she realized that “there may not be that person next to you that's going to speak up for you”. There is no reason for strangers being malicious, to try to knock other people down when they’re not even known to you. Regardless, it is imperative that you are able to defend yourself- just as Brenda Roza did. The earliest I can remember learning that my gender was different and treated differently from someone else’s was probably when I was five or six years old. I always had to wear a dress or an outfit that was always pink. I had to play with dolls and only do things that little girls would normally do and I of course noticed that boys didn’t have to do anything similar to me so I realized that I was being treated differently simply because I was a girl.…

I have worked with many families in the past, and I believe I have applied some of the humility, compassion and positivity that the textbook talks about. I believe that the knowledge that is gained through textbooks and by attending classes is important as well as the skills that are gained through practice when working with families. In my personal experience, I come from a very poor family, which allows me to be humble with those families who are in need. I have experienced the separation of parents, the absence of basic needs, like clothing or food, and I have also experienced the anxiety of being undocumented. I think that as I gain the knowledge and skills, I will be able to integrate it with my personal experiences and I will be able…

I can’t remember my first thought as a baby, but I’m sure I wasn’t able to distinguish between males and females, or the fact that the doctor was a male and the nurse was a female. I just knew I wanted to love and be loved regardless of my race, sex, or religion. My friend Melissa was raped, and it was her fault.…

In those few seconds, I knew we were going to be split up into girls and boys, however, I felt more accustomed to going with the guys then the girls, yet I stayed.
