Overcoming Something Big As I was getting out of the car at 7:45am, you would think that I was related to a sloth. “Just two more years and I am out of here”, I whispered to myself. It is was first day as a junior at George Ball High School and I could not wait for my last to come.
I walked up the stairs to my first period class, where I saw underclassmen pacing up and down the hall trying to find their class. I stepped into my AP English 04 class and noticed that I was the first one to arrive. A strong smell of freshly brewed coffee hits me as soon as I sat down on the first cold seat that I saw. While I was taking out my summer assignment, I cannot help but notice the trophies on the grimy window that said “Teacher of The Year”. All of a sudden a high pitched voice came out of nowhere and excitedly said, “Good morning, welcome to my AP English class!” As eight

Edwards had just informed me that I had not passed my English 01 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) test. Having not passed the STAAR test had me taken out of my AP English class and put in regular English with Mrs. Hailey. When I arrived at home, I waited for my mother with disappointment. After breaking the news to her, she put her warm felt hand on my shoulder and said, “Think positive, you can accomplish this.” The first day in class, the only thing we did was write down definitions from the book. Once we were done, she had nothing for us to do. Three-quarters of the class played on their cellular devices, while the other fourth spent the remaining of time slowly drooling on the assignment. The whole time all I could think about was how I was going to pass a test that I had taken two years ago. I did not want that class to prevent me from graduating, so I took matters in to my own

My teachers are Mrs. Archabal and Mrs.Wheeler, two of the best teachers in the school that are credible. The day we expected to get our assignments back, I felt calm and confident. When I received my paper and saw what my grade was and the comments my teachers made, my whole mood changed. The grade and the remarks were nothing of what I expected, and the grade was well below what I normally score. After this assignment I started to give up because I did not think I would ever do as good and that my writing, in fact, did not improve at all, but Mrs. Moore told me not give up and to keep trying. The talk we had made me realize that I need to learn from this experience and continue to work hard and do my absolute best.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…
