I walked up the stairs to my first period class, where I saw underclassmen pacing up and down the hall trying to find their class. I stepped into my AP English 04 class and noticed that I was the first one to arrive. A strong smell of freshly brewed coffee hits me as soon as I sat down on the first cold seat that I saw. While I was taking out my summer assignment, I cannot help but notice the trophies on the grimy window that said “Teacher of The Year”. Edwards had just informed me that I had not passed my English 01 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) test. Having not passed the STAAR test had me taken out of my AP English class and put in regular English with Mrs. Hailey. When I arrived at home, I waited for my mother with disappointment. After breaking the news to her, she put her warm felt hand on my shoulder and said, “Think positive, you can accomplish this.” The first day in class, the only thing we did was write down definitions from the book. Once we were done, she had nothing for us to do. Three-quarters of the class played on their cellular devices, while the other fourth spent the remaining of time slowly drooling on the assignment. The whole time all I could think about was how I was going to pass a test that I had taken two years ago. On top of all my thoughts, I was sure that class was not going to help me to meet the requirements needed to pass the exam. I did not want that class to prevent me from graduating, so I took matters in to my own
