Personal Narrative: Overcoming Obstacles In My Life

Throughout my elementary school years, I encountered many obstacles, but during my fourth grade career, I experienced some of the most difficult hardships I have ever gone through. I was an extremely loquacious, bright, and well-rounded young girl. My mother; a spontaneous, caring and kind person had recently been engaged to a man named Dennis. Dennis was a unique, creative, and very humorous man. We welcomed him into our petite family and he opened our eyes to some of the most enjoyable moments of our lives. He taught us how to be ourselves and showed us the genuine definition of family. My brother; a friendly, family oriented, and athletic teenager shared a strong relationship with Dennis just as much as I did. We were all so delighted living in our small townhouse. During this time period, my brother and I developed a solid connection with Dennis. He assisted me with my school projects, attended all of my choir concerts, and supported me at sporting events. Dennis played a huge role in my life as both a stepfather, and a reliable role-model. Every difficulty I faced was transformed into an informative lesson. For instance, I was reminded daily to be a leader- not a follower. In the spring of third grade, our family flew to Disney World for the first time. My expectations were high for the most magical place on earth. The vacation was definitely memorable, but only because of the immense stress it caused my family. Dennis was absolutely miserable. It was then that I realized Dennis was not as joyful as he once had been. His jokes were replaced by complaints, usually in relation to a pounding headache. For months, Dennis stayed in his fog of despair as his internal anger increased. Nobody, not even Dennis himself, was prepared for what his animosity had been
