Personal Narrative: Overcoming Barriers

Barriers Beware

To everyone else what does the number 1 stand for? To me it means a whole new legacy. To me it means a whole new side of the leaf. Right now I know you think I’m crazy, and that’s cool. Now let me explain what I’m rambling about. This is a story of perseverance through very lop-sided odds.
How do you get good at something? You get good at it by trying over and over again until you have something mastered. So when I decided I wanted to start playing baseball it really wouldn't have been that big of a deal… if I would have started playing around the age of 4 like all the other boys. But here I was starting at 9 years old. Obviously when I first started I was in little league coach pitch, a very non-competitive league for beginners.

After only playing 4 seasons of little league compared to kids that have been playing since they were 3 and 4, I had surpassed them. The beginning of this “era” started when I made my first travel ball team “The MegaStars”, up until this point I had always been different number because you don’t get to pick your number in little league. I originally wanted to be #42, the number of the baseball legend Jackie Robinson, only to later find out that his number was banned from anyone else using it. Frankly, no one ever told me that this rule was only for the MLB. So I flipped and I had 24. For 4 years I have grinded to get better. I’ve taken harsh criticism, only to show those people they didn't know what they were talking about. I now play showcase baseball which is a travel ball team that plays in front of college coaches, on college fields, and against much harder competition. The 24 dynasty was going to carry me on all the way to the major leagues. That was my train of thoughts until the date: February 16 …show more content…
To my surprise of ALL the kids that made fun of me when I was younger about my “skills” only 3 of them even tried out. All them rest of them had excuses as such: “I’m not gonna’ make it”, “Oh, tryouts are this week?” or my favorite “It’s all just politics the team is already set.”. In my mind I knew they really they had all just quit. Anyway, after all the days of tryouts were over the roster of the 2016 Raiders was on the locker room door. When I got there, there were at least 10 other people there. I nervously aproached the paper streamed with names. Right in front of me was my name “ Elijah Knight”, the fact I had made the team was amazing, but… The fact that not a single person from the group of boys that teased me just 5 years ago didn’t even make the practice team was even sweeter. Elijah Knight the only “1” from the graduating class of 2019 from northwest little league made the team. When it came time to pick jersey numbers I stopped and started thinking. The dynasty of 24 was amazing, but it was a time of playing catch-up. So now it was time to start a new dynasty. Since I was the only one to make it out of all those boys I hastily picked the jersey #1. Now the era of number one is not to be compared to #24 because I’m not playing catch up anymore. It’s domination

I have played baseball ever since I was a young kid, but somehow, at seventeen I still had numerous struggles with it. You would think after my grandpa being drafted to the Pittsburgh Pirates, a Major League baseball team, and my dad getting a full ride to the University of Denver their skill would have rubbed off on me, but you would be wrong. I wasn't terrible, I could hit a 90 mile per hour fastball and I could, for the most part, field a ground ball. However, I was definitely not about to be scouted by the college scouts.…

I was born in Cairo,Georgia in the year 1919, now growing up I didn't have the best childhood but my mother Mallie still loved me and my four other siblings. Wish I could say the same about my dad Jerry but for him work came before family so he didn't have much time for the five of us not even mother, but I didn't let that get me down. I still went out with my older brother and played ball with him, I remember when myself and him went to the local baseball field I came to watch him and his friends play but they were short a man weighing their options they decided to…

While growing up, sports have always been a big part of my life. At the age of only six years old, my parents first signed me up for coach pitch softball. Little did they know that I was going to fall in love with the game and that they were going to have to spend countless hours at softball fields during the spring each year watching me play. Being so young when I first started playing, winning and losing did not matter at all. As long as I got to throw, hit, and catch the ball, I was happy.…

Failure has the power to change lives; many cannot handle the presence of failure. I remember the first time I failed at something it changed my state of mind from high to low, filled me with anxiety and turned my world into chaos. What had such a powerful impact on my life is loved all over the United States, it is known as “America’s pass time,” the great sport of baseball. I originally decided to join baseball to make my family proud, no one else in my family played sports anymore due to harsh injuries. I would always hear my father say the day he had a son who played baseball would be the happiest day of his life.…

My first baseball game ever had been off to a tremendous start; until my next at bat. After my first at bat, I was riding my high horse thinking I was going to get another hit and make my dad proud all over again. I stepped into the white caulk batter’s box, and went through it all again. As the pitch came in, I noticed it seemed to be coming towards me instead of down the middle. I wasn’t sure what to do, so I stayed right where I was; and got…

Pop Up I've played baseball as long as I can remember, but somehow, as a junior in highschool, my swing was still consistently inconsistent. You'd think that the many years of swinging a bat over and over and all the hundreds of baseball movies would have rubbed off on me, but you would be wrong. Well not completely wrong, I did learn a few pointers on how to get my timing down, and I could run decently fast, but I wasn't going to be drafted into the MLB or even scouted for a college team. Last summer, my VFW summer team wasn't anything special; we had a few solid players, but also some players, like me, were struggling to make solid contact with the baseball.…

I am currently a baseball player for Lower Columbia College where I am also pursuing a general education AA with the expectation of transferring to a four-year college or university in fall of 2016. I signed with the Red Devils in 2014 while still in high school, receiving a scholarship to play for them during my college freshman and sophomore years. Although I originally planned on majoring in education to teach math and science at the middle and high school levels, my interests have shifted to focus on sports therapy/physical therapy due to my involvement in sports. I have been playing baseball since I was seven (7) years old, dedicating a large percentage of my time and energy to be the best player possible. Because I was always on the…

The World Does Not Define Me; I Am My Own Identity To begin this competition, Morning. Not “Good Morning”. If you’ve seen Undercover Brother, you may comprehend what I’m saying, but for those who haven’t seen it, instead of explaining it using expletives and getting DQ'd, here’s the whole scene long story short; if you say Good Morning, you’re wanting to kill me first thing in the morning. The movie itself is filled with stereotypes that are designed to define people of color to ultimately make people laugh. Some people may unfortunately believe these stereotypes and might ask me if I hate mayo or miracle whip and love hot sauce on my fried bologna sandwiches.…
