When I was four, I became a world-renowned veterinarian. Confidently, I strolled out of my house wearing my ID card and lab coat into the crisp and brightly lit night air. It was Halloween, and I was ready to conquer the neighborhood. In Kansas, a long 45 minute drive in the middle of the summer can be brutal. There’s the constant sickening rocking of the car as each bead of sweat rolls down your forehead. There’s the banter of family members as they argue purely to pass the time. The only thing driving me to survive this treacherous car ride is the thought of what is to come. After waiting so long, the realization hits me that I will finally get a dog.…

Dolls and Barbies were not my kind of toy as a child. However hand me some stuffed animals and a doctor's kit, and I'd happily play veterinarian. I'd lose myself for hours, carefully wrapping paws and tails in toilet paper casts and bandages. Knowing this, is it any wonder that suffering from a lack of actual flesh and blood furballs (due to our landlord's rule of no pets) I have 'adopted' several plushies?…

Humans are sometimes arrogant enough to believe that our lives matter more than others, but in owning a dog it 's clear to see why it doesn 't. I know some people consider their pets as a part of their families. I strongly agree with that stance towards the dog I have in my home. Having been a dog owner since the age of nine, I can claim that a lot of growing and maturing goes on during that timeframe. Pets have this ability to teach people things that even humans cannot.…

My first real responsibilities were beginning and accountability was starting to crawl its way into my life. I would have to sacrifice countless hours of free time, hanging out with friends, and sleep in order to work. I relate to Schoonover because like her on the weekends, I would go to the lake with my friends and out to lunch with them.
