Personal Narrative: Open Water Swim

Improved Essays
My first year was plagued with homesickness. I was nine, in a foreign country with one person I knew, my sister. My older sister: outgoing, brilliant, everyone’s favorite. She dropped me the first day. I was shy, withdrawn, and alienated. I had never been away from home for more than a few days, let alone three weeks. What made my experience so difficult was not just the homesickness but the extreme physical demands I faced.

Camp Ak-O-Mak (Ontario, Canada) is not a traditional camp. It was the first and remains the only women’s open water swim training camp in the world. Twice a day swim training, weekly triathlons competitions, open water swim races of every conceivable distance. It was hard. I was exhausted and hated every minute of it. The camp motto is “Tough Enough?” I decided I was not. I didn’t care. I vowed to never go back.

Nine years later, Ahmic Harbor, Ontario, is my favorite place

I confidently showcased my athletic abilities and at thirteen I pushed myself to a new level-- The MAG. This is a continuous 9 mile open water swim from camp to the town of Magnetawan. Each athlete is accompanied by a canoe and two safety observers. I completed it in three hours and 33 minutes. This is one of my proudest moments. It couldn’t have been possible without letting go of my fears and insecurities.

My role at camp shifted recently from camper to counselor. I am incredibly proud that my mentors and coaches recruited me to continue the tradition of excellence as a staff member. My leadership skills, organizational abilities and patience are tested through the responsibility of caring daily over eight weeks for 16 young girls. My co-counselors and I are in charge of everything: program development and ideas, midnight flashlight washroom runs (Canada eh!), cheerleading tired athletes, mediating preteen arguments and homesickness. I am a certified pro in diverting

After passing the qualifying test I moved on to the municipal lifeguard training program; which is a forty hour training course, a CPR course, and a written test. The hardest part of the program is the final swimming test; to qualify for a pool assignment, candidates must be able to swim 440 yards in 7 minutes and 40 seconds, or 6 minutes and 40 seconds to qualify for a beach assignment. Though out this whole process family and friends are making bets on the outcome. But I knew what the outcome was going to be, I was determined, all that training boiled down to that one moment. Walking to Penn Station I let out a sigh of relief, and hopped on the LIRR to go home.…

Managing to break free from the first set of waves, I pushed forth into the next set of unceasing five foot waves. With legs bent upwards and arms plunging one after the other in a Michael Phelps mentality to finish the race with swift strokes, I kept my body centered in the middle of my seven foot board just like my grandpa positioned me to do so. With a split second to pause and raise my head to look over an oncoming wave, I made out the face of my grandpa, looking back at me from his own board and grinning at the look of my determined face to get out into the line-up. Eminent to the gray-haired “townies” who create their own spindrift from whipping the tail of their boards high in the air, is a homely beach, Rockpiles.…

A role model is a person that is looked up to or is an example to be imitated. In “True Story of Lake Ontario” a failed Olympic swimmer attempts a treacherous swimming expedition across Lake Ontario. Similarly a slightly precarious mountain climber makes her risky journey up Mount Everest in “Sharon Woods: No Limits”. Though both women are strong and sturdy role models, one is to a certain extent superior to the other. Even though Marilyn had become an outstanding rile model during her long twenty-one hour trek across Lake Ontario, she still has some flaws to her character.…

On November 15th, 2015 I had to lead a 4-person row boat in a 4000 meter race in Mission Bay, San Diego. It was my first year with my high school’s rowing team and rowing in general, and I loved it. It was 6 in the morning when my coach told my group words I would never forget, “You guys are my top boat. If anyone’s winning, it’s you guys.” I was the stroke of my boat, meaning I set the pace everyone follows.…

I began to spend more time worrying about my performance than actually trying to improve it. Before I knew it, I had slipped into a hole of swim season depression. I counted the days until it was over. Despite my best efforts to avoid the butterfly stroke, my coach really seemed to think I had a natural talent for it. Naturally, the team’s butterflyer quit and I was chosen to replace her in the one hundred yard butterfly: arguably one of the most hated races in the swim world.…

The bed mercilessly taunts my exhausted limbs to return but my determined heart persuades me to brave the trial by water once more. As I dive over the ice cold pool, dread and regret fill every moment until my body finally makes contact. For two, sometimes three, hours the situation will only worsen as I repeatedly raise my arms above my head and pull back as hard as possible. Weeks of this pass by, all for the sake of being able to travel through 100 meters of water a few milliseconds faster. Swimming has been my primary sport since the age of eight.…

There are few things in sports journalism that I’m more comfortable with than a beat. My experience – primarily in college as a writer, then editor, of the Daily Bruin at UCLA – has been shaped by the beat system. UCLA’s strongest athletic teams are often the Olympic sports rather than football or men’s basketball, and the Daily Bruin is lucky to have a large enough staff to fully cover all of those teams. Since my first day in the Sports Department as a contributor on the men’s water polo beat, I’ve been trained to go to every single practice and every single game, developing close relationships with players and coaches in the process. That first season with men’s water polo was like being thrown into the deep end, as I entered midway through the 2014 season.…

and I practiced at Tamiami Pool (public olympic size pool) coached by a college student named Murphy. The coach was a skinny, tall, and tan skinned young man with a short haircut. He was a relaxed man which really surprised me because i expected a tough and demanding coach. The first time I got in the pool I was embarrassed at how slow i was going, seeing as kids younger than me swam faster with just their legs. As months passed by i started progressing until i was able to practice with a tougher and faster group.…
