Personal Narrative: Only Looking At The Cover

Only Looking at the Cover The girl was dressed extremely nice, her hair reflecting light with its shine, and her eyes glassy with content. Confidence was radiating out of her skin like the sun's rays radiating to Earth’s core. She seemed to have not an apprehension of the world. Even on the most unfavorable days, she would shrug it off and continue to stride along with a scintillating smile affixed to her face. She came off as the conceited type. She was the new girl.
Or so that’s what everyone had jumped to believe.
You would envision that she had the “commercial” type family that would go on walks together, wear corresponding colors in a family portrait, and eat dinner at the table together with the occasional, “Could you pass the green

The only thing you could hear was the crisp crunch of my apple with each dreadful bite I took. My eyes would be glued to the clock’s small hand, following it in circles until the bell had snapped me out of my daze. Every day we followed the same routine, asking how our previous classes had been, and then settling our main focus back to eating.
It was only a couple weeks later when she rushed in late and didn’t have that same vibe she always gave off. Instead, she looked like she was a deer in headlights that had no idea what she was doing, or where she was going. I felt like it was my job to be a friend to her because she hadn’t had any other friends that would be a helping hand to her. I was there for her that one day, and ever since then we’ve been best friends. We are the type of best friends that know everything about each other like it's our own

People tend to judge other people based on their “covers”, and the way they portray their characters. We tend to judge without knowing, or speaking to them. I believe that we should acquire more knowledge about people before we try to stereotype. I believe that before we set our judgements against someone, we should think about what they are going through every day and take that into consideration. I now understand what is meant when my elders told me not to judge a book by its

Ariyonna Underwood As one ages, one starts to become their own person, figuring things out for oneself and becoming more independent. But as for me, I was a very shy, quiet, and stay-to-myself kind of person. I didn’t like being around a lot of people or just doing nothing. When times got hard I would listen to my music and just be in my own little world. I would bottle up all my emotions and not tell anybody anything.…

“Do not judge a book by the cover”: children have been told this for centuries, so why is it that adults do not abide by their own advice? Judging, or classifying, others based off of outward characteristics has been a problem throughout the world for centuries. Over time, things have begun to equal out socially for all races in the world, but out of habit humans still stereotype one another based off of looks, skin color, or social standing. These stereotypes have been shaped over time and have become intertwined into society. Classification tends to be a general indication of a certain type of person based off of other people’s opinions; however, this does not represent the entirety of those people with similar characteristics.…

Stereotyping, judging, or making an example out of people is a part of human nature. Examples are made to demonstrate something, such as power or the rewarding of good behavior. Judging, or assessing others, is a sign of human weakness. Often, after making an assessment of one person, we connect that judgement to another because of a shared trait. Thus, the stereotype is born.…

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a stereotype as “a standardized mental picture that is held in common by members of a group and that represents an oversimplified opinion, prejudice attitude, or uncritical judgment”. Stereotypes can be very harmful to the members of the groups that they are imposed upon. With everything going on in the world today, one should take a moment to look at the impact of stereotypes and the harm that they have caused and continue to cause, especially stereotypes that are applied to certain groups based on the color of their skin, culture, or religious beliefs. America in particular has a history full of harmful stereotypes and prejudices, many of which were directed towards individuals of African-American descent. It is important to know those stereotypes and work to break them.…

Today is going to be just like any other day, I sketched in my morning journal. The morning Baltimore sun shone past the skyscrapers of downtown, and light protruded through the silk blinds that covered half of the picture window in my room. I rose up from my queen bed. The sheets had become untucked and the comforter lay halfway off the edge. My back rested against the mahogany headboard with my head fitting perfectly between two of the wooden posts.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

When someone looks at a person who dresses in dark clothes and has tattoos all across their body assumptions are made that they are generally tough or fearsome. When an individual has blue hair or dresses against the norm assumptions are made that they are odd or different from the rest. When a women has big hair, wears six inch heels, and carries a Micheal Kors purse an individual automatically assumes that she is rich, stuck-up, or into herself. Of course some of these assumptions may be true, but one must look beyond the outer appearance before stereotyping an individual. Just because someone looks different from the rest does not mean he or she should be scrutinized.…
