Personal Narrative: One Of My Best-Fitting Strategies

Improved Essays
For my second well-being strategy I focused on gratitude. I wasn't surprised that this was one of my best-fitting strategies because I firmly believe in the power of gratitude. In order to make sure I was expressing gratitude every day I decided to make my evening prayers focused on only expressing thanks. This also takes a little from the spirituality activity since I would be focusing my gratefulness on God, even though it wasn't one of my best-fitting strategies (which did surprise me).
I had thought of gratitude as simply saying thank you for something, however, my view changed after reading Lyubomirsky's perspective. She quotes Robert Emmons, a renowned writer and researcher on gratitude, who defined it as, "a felt sense of wonder, thankfulness, and appreciation for life" (Lyubomirsky, 2007, p. 89). I thought about how I could adapt this definition into a conscious activity I could do every day. I focused on 3 ways to do that: through my prayers I focused on appreciating God and the beautiful life He gives me everyday, I expressed gratitude and appreciation for my roommates by complimenting them every day through a compliment jar, and I spent some time feeling wonder for this beautiful world.

When I proposed the idea they were all for it and now a little jar sits on the table right by our front door. I have some of the world's greatest roommates, but that doesn't mean they don't get on my nerves every once in awhile. I found that it was in those moments that I got annoyed that I gained the most from thinking of a way to compliment them. Once I started looking for the good and wrote it down, my frustration evaporated and I was happier. I tell my roommates all the time that I love them, but it's nice to feel it more often

My chosen quote for my prayer experience is Catherine McAuley’s “Prayer is a plant the seed of which is sown in the heart of every Christian, but its growth entirely depends on the care we take to nourish it.” The values that I have decided to take from this quote are that of growth, care of others and self, and reflection of actions. These values link directly to the quote, as they all discuss the concept of self-growth, through ‘nourishing’ spirituality and helping others. The aim of my religious prayer experience is for my audience to understand way in which they can grow their spirituality and reflect on how they have done this in the past. I have used a combination of scripture references, quotes and prayers to create a sense of connectedness and awareness of God.…

In, “The New Science of Happiness,” Claudia Wells discusses 3 great ways to become more happy. By getting more pleasure out of life, becoming more engaged in what you’re doing, and finding ways to make your life more meaningful, Wells explains these actions can greatly influence your happiness levels. Savoring each and every sensory drop from any given moment will increase your gratitude towards life's seemingly mundane interactions. Which brings us to the large topic of gratitude which Wells, in conjunction with studies by psychologist Robert Emmons, explains that “Gratitude exercises can do more than life one’s mood… they improve physical health, raise energy levels, and, for patients with neuromuscular disease, relieve pain and fatigue.”…

Happiness has always seemed like an impossible goal to those who always question their own. John Stuart Mill is mentioned in the article, “In Pursuit of Unhappiness” concedes that those who are happy are focused on something else rather than their own happiness. Many philosophers such as John Stuart Mill had a similar idea that happiness should not be sought, but found naturally. In addition, naturally finding happiness will help you enjoy the things you like to do for yourself not because you think it will make you happy. People usually use their own strong moral beliefs, their loved ones, and even their gratitude to aim in some other direction rather than their own happiness.…

Be Grateful Benedictine Monk, David Steindl-Rast (2013), David talks a lot about what it means to be happy. He talks about how someone could have everything and not be happy, but someone who has nothing could be happy. He attributes happiness to gratefulness. This relates to the love of Crist and prayer because people need to not only know they can hand the lord their problems, but when the lord solves even the smallest problem, they need to send a prayer of gratitude as well. When we stop focusing on what we don’t have and thank the lord for what we do have, happiness is sure to…

Again, not as a manipulation tool here. From a religious standpoint, "God knows what's in your heart"; and, from a scientific standpoint, "you can only truly elevate your emotions to a high enough frequency to make a change in your life when you feel TRUE gratitude in your heart." Getting rich with the power of gratitude is nothing new. Wallace Wattles wrote "The Science of Getting Rich" way back in 1910, where his chapter on gratitude was his longest chapter. It should also be noted that Albert Einstein made it his practice to say thank you at least a hundred times a day, thinking how grateful he was for the help of the information he had obtained from other scientists.…

Article Review “Beyond Reciprocity: Gratitude and Relationships in Everyday Life” an article by Sara B. Algoe, Jonathan Haidt and Shelly L. Gable is aiming to show how gratitude may shape new relationships and the quality of those relationships we choose to keep in the future. This seems to be becoming a more relevant topic because it is somewhat abstract, and could really show us how we create meaningful relationships with others and how first impressions mean more than we think. According to this article there has not been much research, either correlational or experimental, done on the effects of gratitude towards new and ongoing relationships. But what has been looked at is the motivations of the recipient of the gratuitous gesture to…
