Personal Narrative On Getting A Driver's License

Decent Essays
I always dreamed from a young age to get my license. The one specific event marked my transition from childhood to adulthood-getting my driver’s license. Although it was quite challenging to achieve this goal, I was able to after much effort. I failed once, but I was determined the second time.
It was August 28th, one of the hottest days of summer. The time was 11 o’clock, and I was terrified. See, I took the test the first time in July, but sadly I failed. I practiced and practiced time and time again. Hopefully, my practice would pay off. We drove to the driver’s license center. Then, we walked through the door and took a seat. Before I knew it, my name was called.

The thought of getting behind the wheel seemed like far too much responsibility. While waiting for my mom to drive me anywhere was a somewhat aggravating loss of freedom, I felt I needed more time before I went back to piloting heavy machinery. I felt obligated to act almost as I had when I was first getting my license- I even spent awhile only driving with one of my parents in the passenger seat. At first, I was screaming internally from the moment I put the key in the ignition to the moment I parked it at my destination. Changing lanes made me very anxious, I saw all cars as threats (actually I still do), and unprotected left hand turns came close to actually frightening me.…

The alarm goes off at 8:15 AM like every morning. I roll out of bed, shower, slap on some sunscreen, put on my uniform, and head to work. Getting there, of course, is simple. I hop in the car, punch the button to start the engine, put the windows down to feel the summer breeze, plug in my phone to blast my go-to driving playlist, and I’m ready. Before I set off to lifeguard, a voice reminds me of what my grandma said when I first began driving, “I’m not afraid of you driving, I’m afraid of other drivers.”…
