Picture it, me standing to the far left slightly behind this captivating camera aiming directly at its target. Lights fixed above the object like a dark cloud hovering over some pessimistic person. Headphones covering my ears muting the rest of the room out, and the voices project themselves as they rehearsed it. As time runs out, the words slowly roll off my tongue with accomplishment, “Cut!”

In the films The Adventures of Félix, directed by Olivier Ducastel and Jacques Martineau, and Tomboy, directed by Céline Sciamma, both protagonists go through a journey of self discovery and identity searching. Though very different in the substance of the story, the theme is relatively similar, covering concepts ranging from prejudice and peer inclusion or rejection to family tensions and romantic interests. Félix’s story follows him on his own, continuously meeting new people with whom he shares his narrative. His journey of self discovery has the guise of paternal discovery, but as it progresses, it is clear that it is all about Félix finding himself. To contrast, Laure/Mikaël goes through their journey with the same group of people, their family and the new friends they make in the beginning of the film.…

Just a few simple words can have so much power. In documentaries, despite the importance of visual cues, the audio track is something that ties the film together and brings it to a whole new level of depth. Without audio, the New York Times op-doc “Climbing the Shark’s Fin” would not evoke the sense of emotion that it does. Filmmaker and wife of one of the subjects, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi creates a sense of adventure for the audience. Using narration and dialogue, Vasarhelyi draws emotion out of the audience to encourage people to both take and embrace risk.…

The world of film is a place where two senses collide—hearing and sight. Being able to watch characters maneuver through life as the story unfolds is just part of the experience. When sound is added to the mix, an entirely different dimension to the adventure is created. This feature is capable of propelling the viewer even deeper within the plot; it can stop a person in their tracks, preparing them for what is to come. Sound guides the viewer from one scene to the next and creates anticipation.…

Films are products of their time and evolve as American culture evolves. As such, directorial use of existing technology, and the cultural desire for improved movie-making have led to the development of the motion picture industry. “To most people, a movie is popular entertainment, a product to be produced and marketed by a large commercial studio. Regardless of the subject matter, this movie is pretty to look at – every image is well polished by an army of skilled artists and technicians” (Barsam & Monahan, 2016, p.3).…

My experiences over the last six years living in NYC have shaped me into the approachable and compassionate person I am today. I have been immersed in a melting pot with many different culturally and economically diverse populations. These unique experiences have broadened my horizons and allowed me to gain valuable communication skills and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I searched out opportunities to give back and help the people in my community both in volunteering in hospitals, educating high school students, and interning in private practices. I even traveled with the organization Medlife, setting up a medical clinic to provide basic medical care and education to people in the poor and underserved communities surrounding Lima, Peru.…

Personally, I don't think that I would open my business up next to a competitor. While the video gave great reasons as to why you should, and why other businesses do - i.e. to keep eye on their competitors, and to make sure that their business isn't be overshadowed (passive voice) - I still think that opening further away would give better advantages for a business. By opening up further away, my business would be able to serve those who live more closely, and wouldn't force them to have to drive further and have to choose between my business or the other business. Also, by keeping my distance from my competitor, I would be able to truly run my business, and show my strengths as a business to customers, instead of constantly having to worry…

Eadweard Muybridge lived from 1830 to 1904 and gained worldwide recognition for photographing animal and human movement. He was hired by railroad baron Leland Stanford in 1872 and used photography to prove that there was a moment in a horse’s gallop when all four hooves were off the ground at once. Much of his later career was spent at the University of Pennsylvania, producing thousands of images that capture progressive movements within fractions of a second. Muybridge made these discoveries at the university from 1884 and 1887. For a century, historians considered these photographs as scientific evidence of bodies in motion.…

When I go to the movie theater to watch a movie, I can’t help but to fall in love with all the incredible scenarios that are shown. Something advantageous to the movies is that, it takes less time than reading a book; movies are basically short-ways. Reading can be hard for some people, inpatient people can’t deal with the long suspense that books have, there’s also slow-readers, reading a book make take way longer in their cases. It’s only natural that they will choose to watch a movie instead of finishing or even starting to read a book.
