“Shes coming back right?” a baffled 7 year old asks in response to the appalling news of her mother’s death. A vibrant imagination is accompanied by a crushing pain of reality that trails behind it ; I discovered this when I heard the words “no” . 10 years later, that conversation lingers in my head and holds not a cacophonous nor euphonious sound, but instead holds the neutral tone of reality, an alarm . As routine , at 6a.m., I hear a melodious alarm followed by the pitter-patter of my aunt who is getting ready for work.…

When I think about the boy who I was growing up, the young adult I am today, and the man I plan to be in the forthcoming years, one aspect of my life stands out to me far more radiantly than anything else: my culture, my skin, my identity as a Bangladeshi-American. There aren't many clubs or organization for Bangladeshi Americans such as myself. Make no mistake, there are certainly events for Bangladeshis living in the United states, many that I have attended due to various entreaties from my parents. These are event where the only language spoken is one that I barely speak (Bengali), the only music conversed about is that which I don't listen to or understand, and the only events discussed happen in another country that I have spent only a…

The people’s reaction to me breaking the social norm of wearing shoes in the house was a mixture of confusion, anger, and ignorance. The behaviors they displayed were expected as they didn’t understand why I haven’t taken off my shoes yet. Some continued to look at my feet and scanning my body over and over without saying anything, while others, mostly the adults, would be angry at my actions. However, a few relatives didn’t notice my shoes, as they assumed I have already taken them off. At first, my family thought I had an important task to do, so they disregarded it.…

As I get buzzed into the station by Chuck, my usual crew chief and mentor, I am already set to begin the comprehensive inspection of our ambulance’s inventory lovingly termed “the rig check.” With 207 items comprising said inventory, it’s not going to be a short check in any sense, but to me, it’s still one of most valuable jobs that I perform as a member of the Clinton rescue squad. When I first joined the squad as a cadet, I marveled at the sheer quantity of tools and supplies housed within the seemingly endless cabinets, compartments, and containers of the rig. From backboards and neck collars to jumper cables and blue gatorade mix, this super-stocked crimson force of nature had every item to solve every problem that our plucky team of…

The funny part was that to make it fun and goofy we dressed up as Alvin and the chipmunks. Ok it wasn’t originally our idea to dress up, it was also part of the tradition to dress up or some something equally as funny. Most guys went in some form of drag and most girls wore anything that let them have on as much clothing as possible. After we made our jump we swore we would never in a million years, even in our lives depended on it would we ever and I mean ever do it again.…

When I was around 4 my skin was probably pretty delicate because of my age, so One day, I was playing outside running around and I slipped on some sand on the ground sliding my knee onto pavement scraping almost the entire skin off the knee. I remember the next part very well because I started bleeding profusely; you could've literally saw the flesh. Luckily I didn't need stitches all it took was a large bandage wrap around my left knee. When the skin finally healed, it left a scar; to this day though, the scar is now hardly noticeable and very small in size. I once burned myself with the car cigarette lighter when I was young.…

I have come to figure out that a lot of my soul searching and self development has really just been trying out new things and figuring out all the things I am not.
