Personal Narrative On Air Conditioning

Improved Essays
Clunk, The sound of the deadbolt sliding into place, securing me in the house. Or so I thought. My mom got in the car and drove away, to return at 9 o’clock that night. I spent about an hour just sitting around, checking my phone, and wasting time. I thought about cleaning my “biohazard of a messy room” but I decided against it. I then realized that I wanted to go on a bike ride, but before that, I would need to do a load of laundry. I put it in the clothes, turned the machine on, and left it running. I closed the doors leading to the kitchen, as well as the hallway, wanting to turn on the air conditioning. Since our air conditioning unit was a window one and at least 10 years old it only worked in one room, which we designated as the living …show more content…
As soon as the man saw me he motioned down the hallway telling me to come. I followed, not exactly knowing what was happening at the time. Going down the hallway I see my calligraphy on the wall, the marks in crayon that I made as a baby. in As I turned down the hallway he pointed to my mom's room, telling me to sit. When I moved forward into my mom's room I saw that a bag of jewelry was on the floor, and had been opened. As I sat down the realization hit me like a truck, I was being robbed. When I sat down I couldn't move a muscle, scared out of my mind. I heard him step in the house for slightly longer, then I heard a noise of scraping metal, and all was silent. Too petrified to turn around, seeing as the man may have still been in the house, I felt like I would be here for a long time. As I sat I realized that the robber had not noticed that I was holding my tablet when I saw him, I also remembered that I had enabled texting on my tablet since I sometimes would forget to take my phone off of airplane mode. Quickly I sent a text to my mother reading, “We're being robbed, call the cops.” with the next text stating “Do not text back!” Fearing that my phone still had the ringer on, and the robber may be in the house and hear the ringer. Being that my mom was quite scared and not knowing what was going on she texted back “R u Serious?” I responded yes, and fearing that she may not be taking me seriously I also texted my grandma the same thing. As I sat there I worried that this situation would be disastrous for my credibility, I mean the man had probably booked it out of there and only took jewelry, what if my mom thought that I was lying? All was silent in the house until I heard a loud buzzing noise, I calmed down, realizing that it was just the automatic timer on the washing machine. I sat

A loud ring echoed throughout the house and cleared my hazy mind as I lay sprawled out on the couch. My thoughts slowly cleared and I remembered the messages from my phone. Yet another ring awakened me as I realized I had invited company. “Here” the text read. My plans for the night hit me like a sledgehammer to a nail and I sprang from the couch to grab the door.…

It was a late Saturday night, later than any sane person ought to be up. I, John Packer, had just gotten home to my apartment from an awful shift at the laundromat in which I worked. See, I was the night janitor there, and since the laundromat was open until midnight, my shifts start around 12:30 - 1 A.M. Some nights, it wasn't so bad. I could get done in under 2 hours.…

Sunlight seeped through the window onto my old worn out chair. I had fallen asleep there from the night before, drifting away in my thoughts about all I had done when I was young. I was so proud and satisfied with what I had accomplished, and even though most of the world looked at me as a monster, I couldn't be more proud about who I was. I had escaped from my worst nightmare, and ended up in an old dilapidated apartment in southern Argentina. My name, Josef Mengele, was on countless kill lists, and my head was worth thousands if it was brought back, but in my opinion I had made that task impossible.…

May I share a brief story with you? At first blush, the incident I am about to convey may not seem very important, but hang in there and you’ll see what I mean. Well, once upon a Saturday afternoon, I was called upon to change the thermostat in my son’s newly acquired home. To be sure, my home maintenance skills are modest at best, but I thought I could easily handle the job. The existing thermostat, which had rendered many years of reliable service with the able assistance of a nearby wall heater, was dilapidated and inaccurate.…

It has come to my attention that an inexcusable cruel inhuman action by the state of Texas has been being committed over the past. The state of Texas has been refusing to insert air conditioning to most of it prisons. Inmates have been dying of hypothermia and yet very few have stood up to this horrible crime the state has committed. In the summer of 2011 nine inmates died because of the hot summer temperature. This extreme heat and no air conditioning is a violation of all human rights.…

4:15 happened to be the time I begrudgingly woke up this morning. Blinking a few times to really make sure my watch was correct, I rolled over onto my back and stared up at the bunk above me. Not expecting it to make too much of a difference, I didn’t turn on my miniature battery-operated fan the night before, so I woke up sweaty and miserable. Apparently, the Honduran heat began just as early as the sunrise, which just happened to be around 5 a.m. every day. It may have been the sixth day of an eleven day mission trip, but new jobs and long hours each day led to a complicated circadian cycle.…
