In the summer of 1940, it all began. The first affect began with the news. The radio echoed throughout our home hearing updates of the war. My father began increasingly worried with the progress of the German army and when the draft began his worry doubled. Even though he was over the typical limit for military service we all knew when it came to war there was no rules. My mother always seemed on the verge of snapping with the increased stress. Her age seemed to increase with the day as the rumors of bombing drew closer. My brothers and I still did not understand the capacity at which all was happening. We still “played” war at this time and ran through the varnished hallways of our Victorian estate. Each of us 4 children had our own room with a private bathing room. We lived in luxury with the sense of hunger and poverty in the back of our minds. We never had a worry and attended the most prestigious boarding schools throughout all of Britian. However, that was before the bombs. We thought that the food shortages were the worst but when the bombs came our reality became real. We ate very little and the abundance that once was had disappeared.

This made my whole family implode. I remember exactly when our family received news of such things. My mother just sank to the ground crying. At first, I was unaware of the reasoning but then the realization stuck me. Our home had over 400 windows in it. It took about 4 months to finally get enough covers and during majority of the time our family faced fines from the government. They took our wealth away and left us with barley enough money to buy our share of rationed food. They were so callused to the reality of our situation due to their “regulations”.
