Have you ever experienced the feeling before an important interview which will affect your whole life? It happened to my family on an autumn day in October 2010. When my brothers and I were woken up by the first sunshine of the day, we knew that we would face it, which we had been waiting for ten years. Mixed feelings showed on my family members’ faces: worry, anxiety and happiness because we were going to have the immigrant interview to America.
I still remembered our appointment was set at 11 am, but we arrived the U.S. Embassy early. It was because not only we could not sleep well, but also we did not want to be stuck in traffic. When we got there, a lot of people were getting line outside the building. They managed to hold the thick

She gazed our documents carefully and asked us about sponsor person’s information and showed her any proof of our relationship with sponsor. Before interviewing, I hoped that I would not deal with a scowl on the officer’s face, but the lady I met was so severe. After fifteen minutes asking, she wrote something on our document. While she was writing, I noticed the pink paper and green paper on her right hand side, but which one we would be received. My heart seemed to stop beating when she held both color papers. I waited this moment for a long time, and now my life depended on the color of one of them. When she gave us the pink papers, I was so happy that I bursted with my tear. My brother’s family also got a good news and finally we all passed the interview. The lady said congratulation us and told us to come back to pick up visa in another day. At this moment, I felt so relieved like getting rid of rock on my shoulder and I knew that I could have a good sleep tonight. On the way home, I called my sponsor and let her know the result. I could feel her happiness on the phone. We immersed ourselves in thought about the new life in America:

Growing up in a family with immigrant parents was not easy. Watching my parents freeze up every time a police officer pulled up next to them was anything but pleasurable. It was an anxiety felt by the whole family not just my parents. My parents, brother, and I endured many of these times throughout the years I’ve been growing up. Even though these were unfortunate moments, we all learned positive things from them.…

Reflective Journal Assignment – Assignment #2 This whole interviewing experience was pretty great and interesting from both sides of the interviewing process; But while I was being interviewed, I felt a slight bit of discomfort during the process and felt that while my “Social Worker” (Bailey) was interviewing me was just a tad bit tense; And what I mean by her being tense is her posture was tense, like she didn’t really seem comfortable at all interviewing me, and her voice was tense as well, she spoke fast and rushed through everything which caused some discomfort. On the other hand, she did make me feel like I was being heard, she never once broke her eye contact with me and somewhat expanded on the questions she originally asked; Also she made it quite easy for me…

Although my mother and I have had countless conversations about her previous life experiences, I was surprised at how much I did not know prior to this interview. I had never thought to ask her about what networks and resources she used to adjust to her new lifestyle in the United States. Our conversation made me realize the importance of friends, family and professionals to shape her as an immigrant parent. Growing up, she was not only a mother but a mentor to me—she supported me endlessly and helped me overcome my challenges as an adolescent. Her story begins with her life in South Korea.…

A few weeks ago, I found myself on the second floor of the North end of the Unity Health Hospital, dressed in the nicest button-up shirt and dress pants I own, shaking so hard that my folder, which held my resume, cover letter, two pens, notebook paper and a cheesy motivational quote stuck to the inside cover, nearly fell out of my hands. My first job interview was an experience that I will never forget. My anxiety reached the point of exacerbation during the fifteen minutes that I spent in the empty lobby. I had intentionally arrived fifteen minutes earlier than my appointed time and was only accompanied by my own thoughts, which were fraught with worry. Had I arrived too early?…

Observations from the Firing Range I decided to take a friend and try out a firing range that had some extensive renovations completed recently. Previous visits were a disappointment, to say the least, but the new management had promised a new look and new experience. Part of the property owners dues that residents paid to the village were used for the renovations and subsequent upkeep.…
