Having Spanish as my first language made early school a challenge. I was placed in a bilingual class in the 3rd grade. Towards the end of that year, I was nominated to be in an all-English class. I was one of the few that showed ability to begin the coming year.
However, I would only speak English at home before I began the classes. On that account, I had trouble writing in proper English for class work. In the following years, I began to use context clues and dictionaries to be able to do homework on my own. I also had excellent and understanding teachers as well as classmates to aid me. With my persistent effort and my peers’ support I became a fluent English speaker and writer.
