Personal Narrative: Nursery Landscape FFA Team

Superior Essays
Reaching a goal and the work it takes to get there can be a long, trying process. My goal is to make it to Nationals on the Nursery Landscape FFA team. I have competed on the Nursery Landscape team since I was a freshman. As a team of three freshmen and one sophomore, our main goal was to place as high we could as individuals which would help our team score. At State Convention, I wanted to place in the top twenty as an individual. Before you can reach the State Convention, you must place in the top teams of the region your FFA Chapter is in. To reach my final goal of making it to the National FFA Convention, I needed to get to regions, advance to State, and place first as a team. After we win the State competition, we then would be competing …show more content…
First of all, there were a total of 140 high school aged students competing in the competition, so the odds of placing in the top twenty were very slim. At Regions we were just given branches to identify. Now, at State we needed to be able to identify the samples by looking at the entire tree. To identify you are supposed to be able to look at the buds and leaves of a tree. Most of these trees were so high up that no one could possibly reach the branches to even look at the buds and leaves. Then came the next problem with the State competition. The trees that were too high up to reach were faced into the sun. We had to look up into the sun and try to identify the tree while being blinded. However, this would not be the last problem with the State competition. We were then given diseases to identify. However, they did not have the sample labeled as disease. If the sample they give you to identify has a disease and they want to know what disease is, they must have a card that says disease next to it. We were given two diseases to identify. We did not find this out until after the competition, however, when we were reviewing the samples that we just identified. This competition was a mess due to the lack of organization. We were actually very proud of ourselves for placing in third. I did not reach my goal of placing in the top twenty. However, I did place twenty first. I was happy with what I had …show more content…
Preparing for Regions and then having two weeks to finish learning everything before State is tough. A lot of effort and hard work have to be put into any FFA competition. Every team must have practice to learn all the required materials. Sometimes that means staying late after school or coming in early in the morning to learn everything. I learned that when you set a goal it is going to take effort, hard work, and dedication. This year we are hoping to place first at Regions. However, our ultimate goal this year is to place first at State so we can advance on to the National competition in October. We are going work together as a team and put all the effort that we have into winning State this

Fast forward a bit to prelims night of grand nationals where we had to compete against 90 bands from across the nation who wanted a shot at a national title and an invitation to march in the 2014 Tournament of Roses parade in California. We had a late performance time on Friday and wouldn’t know the results until Saturday morning. Once we found out we made it to semi-finals we practiced more, then that afternoon we had our performance. If we were in the top twelve of the afternoon, we would earn a spot in the finals performances that night. The clarinet section found out the results from semi-finals on the bus going to finals and we had won.…

Growing up in a small town, where success in the girl’s softball program was excellent, it was every little girl's dream to be a part of that program. When I was a little girl I remember sitting in the stands watching the varsity softball team play thinking about the day when I would get the opportunity to be a part of the program. As I grew older I would think to myself, if I had the chance to play for the program would I excel like all the other girls have done in the past years? Also, I dreamt, as any little girl would, of how breathtaking it would be to be the person who won the game for a state championship title.…

Surrounded by a team of nurses, one doctor, and what seemed to be a grouping of blinding lights, I had a peculiar moment of serenity. I can’t quite explain whether it was the epidural or the fact that for twelve hours my body was engulfed by excruciatingly painful contractions which seemed to be attacking me in a sporadic manner, but in that one moment everything was perfect. Somehow I just let go off every single fear I had, I just remembered that in any moment there would be an extraordinary occurrence. Although a natural part in many women’s lives, since the beginning of time, it was a phenomenon in my life.…

My story starts in a basic classroom: posters on the walls, whiteboards full of lecture notes from previous classes, and tables and chairs strategically placed amongst the room. Two tables have been pushed together and around them sat my fellow FFA leadership team members. Our teacher sat at the head of the table and talked without ceasing, as normal, about the myriad of opportunities set before us, and the minimal amount of time we had to do such tasks. He lectured us about all the activities we need to plan and prepare. Moving from topic to topic, in no particular order, our teacher said these words: “I received an email for a new project to advance our community and need volunteers to pursue this.”…

A long time goal I had and achieved was qualifying for Nationals for Business Professionals of America. At the start of the school year in my business class my teacher introduced us to Business Professionals of America, an organization that puts on business competitions. He gave us a list of topics of which we would take a test and compete against others on, of which I choose Business Law and Ethics. We we’re assigned this in October and had until November before we had to take the test that would be graded, from which the best ones would win at Regionals and go onto States, and from States to Nationals.…
