Personal Narrative: Nothing Is Ever As It Seems

Nothing Is Ever As It Seems “Why do you look so much older than everyone else's parents?” That was the question that I was always asking my parents. My mom, Bernadette and my dad, Michael are about 30 years older than the average parents of kids my age. One day, I got home from elementary school, and my mom decided to finally answer my question. “Chastity, you know how you always ask why we look older? We adopted you when you were 15 months old. Your birth parents died when you were a baby.” When I found out, I was mixed emotions. I kind of grew up a lithe more than I had to, to understand everything completely. Me thinking that my world was turning upside down, never thought that the fact that I was adopted and would never meet my birth parents, and the …show more content…
My dad Michael, was my grandfather before he decided to adopt me. Bernadette is his second wife. I used to call they “nanny” and “poppy” but that eventually just turned into “mom” and “dad”. That being said, I got to stay in the family. Although I have no idea who my birth father or who my family on his side is, I do know my birth moms side. Thankfully I got to be placed with people who are still my family. Growing up, I put my grandparents/adopted parents through a lot. I know that a lot of it does have to do because there are so many missing pieces to my life’s puzzle. If I could change anything, it would be the things that I put them through. I thought that because I was adopted and still had so many questions that it was a bad thing. I think it is more of a good thing. I’d rather be blessed with a beautiful and loving family and have questions, than be stuck with all of the answers and have a crappy life. One thing that I learned in life is that there can always be good to come out of the

My key life lessons are that nothing beats hard work and if you treat others with respect, they will generally treat you with respect. Hard work and effort are the main aspects that lead to “lucky” things happening. Good things don’t just fall into people’s laps, the ones that have the most “luck” generally are those that put in the most effort and work. Also, I have learned that when you truly respect those around, they will respect you back and life is much easier when you aren’t doing things behind each other’s backs.…

Life is simply perspective. Some say that you have your whole life to do something, while others will argue that life is short and you should enjoy it to the full extent of it’s worth. You can look at something as exquisite, or atrocious. It doesn’t change what it is, but it changes your reaction to it. No matter how sure you are about the morality, someone else could view it differently.…

I managed to reach a point where I began making false promises to myself and others about addressing my situation. Among those empty promises was the one where I claimed I would give up drinking, attend rehab and try to get my life back on track. I even fiddled with the thought of seeking inpatient assistance if things weren't working as planned. Let's be clear and fair.…

Every week, time after time, month after month, alone in silence with nothing but the view and envy that I had felt for that one hour, which time and presence wouldn't allow to go away. That freedom was what I wanted -being an outcast- not being forced into fake friendships because I had been conditioned from an early age by my peers to learn there is no such thing as a real friend. Mocking always filled my ears whenever I'd sit there during a Den Meeting; it was me, once again, subjecting myself to internal torment, bringing myself down. Occasionally, I'd be asked to get into a car, with them saying we were going somewhere “fun”. It never was.…

She may not have been happy as to how the whole situation with her family occurred, but when looking through the paperwork, she realized how hard her adoptive parents worked to adopt her, and she appreciated that. Even though meeting her sister and learning about her life did not go as she imagined, she finally got the closure she wanted and needed. There are, however, less understanding endings to finding birth parents. Lisa Lutz’s article “I Found My Biological Parents, and Wish I Hadn’t” talks about having nothing in common with either of her birth parents.…

    My Uncommon Misconceptions

As a child, I had many preconceived notions about my life, one of the major ones had to do with my family. Often times I thought my half cousins were full cousins, my step-grandmother was my real grandmother, I somehow had three grandmas, and the fact that I was convinced I would someday marry my cousin Lucien, being fully unaware that was wrong. However, the most major misconception I had was that I thought I had been adopted because I have red hair and my mom has blonde, while my dad has very dark brown hair. Because of this conviction, I often victimized myself and saw myself as the odd-child-out, though enjoyed the fact that I was adopted. However, unlike many kids, I knew my adopted mom!…

Not many people can say that they’re adopted; but a small percentage is, and I’m lucky enough to be one of them. My mom and dad had split before I was born, leaving my mom to run to my divorced grandpa for help when she was expecting me. He took care of us, but despite these things, my mom never compared to the parent that my grandpa was for me. She struggled with drugs and alcohol, often taking her anger out on me physically when no one was around. After drifting in and out of my life for those reasons, my mom’s custody of me was revoked in August of 2006.…

As a kid, I was always extremely lively, bouncing off the walls everywhere I went. I never slept very much, but that never stopped me from being the epitome of energy. However, the summer before sophomore year things changed. I felt rundown everyday and no matter how much I slept, or attempted to at least, it was never enough.…
