Shaine, this year's commander, waited for everyone to come to a standstill, before he started to speak.

“This year we will decide your placement on the team by your pt test.” He announced solemnly, “We will be starting today at the track, so be ready for the 5-mile run.”

The tense ambiance of the formation was palpable even to the me who was, by nature, vacuous to overall moods. I, personally, was not anxious. I’m sure that, to an outsider, it would seem as though I was radiating a sense of nonchalantness. This was due to the fact that my spot on A-team was virtually guaranteed. I had already ranked everyone on the team in my head. In that ranking, I came in right at eighth. I was cutting it close by being the last member of the team, but I was in eighth by a large margin. For this reason, I was insouciant. Shaine then went over a few formalities before concluding with his characteristic closing.

“We will meet back up at the track. Now, on my command to fall out, fall out. Fall

The room itself was grand and ancient, with walls of rough hewn stone, polished granite floors, and a ceiling as high as ten men. There were eight long tables, the shortest on a raised dais along the far wall, and seven more set orthogonal to the first and extending to the entry. Sheaves of wheat and sprays of spring blooms adorned the walls, and cornucopias spilled fruits, nuts and candies onto each table. There were dancers, at least a dozen of them, draped loosely in silks of gold and rich green, ribbons of fabric that swayed as they swayed, dipped as they dipped, and fluttered about them as they spun. Along walls and in corners, on tables and among revelers, they danced in time to a rhythmic tune—singly and in pairs and trios, all moving with an agile grace, seducing guests with limber acrobatics and inviting smiles.…

I kept the same habits from high school, where I wouldn't ask for help even if I needed it, and tried to do things entirely on my own. Since that wasn't working, and the end of the semester nearing, I did something I never did back in high school: I sought tutor help. The tutor I met with, Cecilia, not only helped me craft near perfect lab reports that were needed to narrowly pass the class, she also inspired me to be a better person. It turns out, which I later found out, that university tutors are not required to help with lab reports. Thus, it occurred to me that Cecilia helped me out of her own whim.…
