Personal Narrative: No Way A Kid In A Disabled

Decent Essays
There is no way a kid in a wheelchair would have made it on time. We left her for her own good, we don't want her getting hurt when she got questions wrong. Plus she would have just slowed us down at breakfast. Also it wasn't even my job to call her and tell her to hurry to the plane, that one is all on Rose. Even if Melody was there we wouldn't have gotten a higher place, I'm sure of it. She didn't even deserve to be there, she probably cheated on both of the tests we had to take. Her helper gave her the answers, or she looked them up on that thing she calls a computer. I don't really feel bad because we were just trying to save her from the embarrassment of being on live national television.

Everyone has experienced some sort of atrocious pain in their lives. At one point in my life I did not believe I will ever walk again. A troubling life changing event occurred when I was just fourteen years old. Every evil thought was occurring in my head all at once. “You won’t walk anymore”, “You won’t heal”, “Time can’t change this”, all thoughts that were going through my mind while being in a wheelchair.…

My interest in child poverty persistence dates back to my childhood. Growing up in Liberia and acclimating to America as a first generation refugee, I can assuredly communicate the difficulty experiences of children from impoverished families. In Liberia, I lived in a two-bedroom tent with 10 relatives, we owned nothing and when a civil war arrived, we lost families and the tent. While coming to America, two out of the 14 relatives that applied were selected from the immigration process. My father, grandfather and I came with the clothes on our backs.…

Ten year old, Lafayette Rivers exclaims enthusiastically in Alex Kotlowitz’ 1992 biography There Are No Children Here, “If I grow up, I’d like to be a bus driver”. Sophomore year, in Honors English, we were reading out loud in class when this aspiration of a lower-income, innocent child, was lethargically muttered by a classmate, and to my dismay, I began to cry. I was saddened by the fact Naperville was less than 60 miles away from Chicago, yet my peers knew so little of what too many city children, like Lafayette who lived in Cabrini Green, had to endure. What broke my spirit, was that my peers were only sympathizing for that class period and would go on with their daily lives, giving no second thought to children who are less fortunate, who have to give so much just to help their families survive, and who are not even sure they will have the opportunity to grow up.…

Can you believe a kid, diagnosed with ADD, who struggled in school, who lacked self-confidence, and who didn’t feel as smart as the other kids, could be awarded a college football scholarship and be pursuing a Business Administration and Management degree? I am that kid. I have gained vital experiences through my involvement in all sports related activities, most significantly football. My coaches, teammates, and training have taught me that taking pride in my actions, and being goal oriented and driven will help me achieve great things. This scholarship will further that and afford me critical time to concentrate on studies, spend time learning about businesses in the community, and discovering what organizations or community service opportunities…

I work at the local Fareway here in Indianola and every Monday and Friday a couple from the COC comes and buys lots of food for kids in foster homes. It was a rainy Monday night around 6 p.m. and the couple came in to buy their groceries for the kids as usual. I was standing there bagging other people's groceries and taking them out for them. When I came back in, I had to bag all of the couples groceries for the kids in foster homes.…

The person that I interviewed for this assignment is Julie Storm. Julie has been one of the special education teacher at the Webb City Junior high and High School for several years. I also touch bases on how being around these students have come to influence her…

There are many career opportunities in this world. Sometimes it can be hard to find one career field to focus all your time and energy into. I love nutrition and learning new ways to help others with their nutritional intake. But, becoming a dietetic is not for me as I thought it would be. The reason I have chosen to go a different route with my career is because I have found my calling helping people with disabilities and have choose to get my certificate for a Developmental Disability Specialist (which included courses: PSY 101, PSY 243, PSY 249, PSY 241, PSY 242, PSY 244).My cousin was born with cerebral palsy and has been in a wheel chair from day one.…

During grades second, fourth, and fifth grade most of my teachers thought that I had a learning disability because I would read at a slower pace than my peers. In second grade, my teacher singled me out of the other groups that my classmates were majority in and she put me in a group, where the other students were barely adjusting to English as a second language. I was only about six or seven-years-old, when that event happened to me. Therefore, I started to believe that something was wrong with me, so I started practicing reading how much words I could read a minute by my mother timing me on an alarm…
