Personal Narrative: No Place In High School

I am walking through the empty, dimly lit hallway of _______ High, as I have done a million times before. Passing endless room after room filled with rows of desks, where students meet to grasp all the knowledge they can. I press my hand up against the cold, blue metal lockers that are hugged tightly against the cream painted brick walls. The smell of damp and musty air, filling my nose with each inhale. I really don’t have any business being here today. Yes, I am a student, but as far as I’m concerned, that’s no reason to stay trapped in this prison like some sort of criminal. I shut my eyes and hear a soft hum of voices from the other end of the hallway, coming from the class that I am supposed to be attending right now. But my feet refuse to go any further. What’s the point? Why am I even here? There’s nothing and no one holding me here, but why do I choose to stay?
“I’m not sure either why you’re standing here outside my class, when you should be in your own down the hall?” I was startled by the authoritative voice that came from

I didn’t even realize that I had asked those questions out loud. If I hadn’t been interrupted, who knows what else I might have said. Then again, I don’t really have anything to lose. My parents died when I was about four years old, which left me only those very few years to spend loving them, and leaving the rest to spend longing for them. After their death, I was constantly being passed around from foster home to foster home, due to the fact that no one wanted me around for very long. About a year ago, my foster “family” adopted me, but I can’t imagine it lasting. I have already caught them on several occasions arguing over what to do with me. Who really wants a depressed, argumentative, teenager who has nothing going for him? Now is doesn’t take years of schooling to be able to answer such a question. The answer is

The hardest thing I’ve ever went through? Let me take you back to almost three years ago to a very cold Thursday morning in January. I was sitting in history class when suddenly something very strange happened; the announcement speakers came on. To most people it would seem like it was a very typical day to day event to listen to announcements; but at my school announcements were rarely ever said. My classroom got completely silent; to the point where you could have heard a pin drop.…

Before high school, I always thought I was an average student, but when I transitioned into high school, people started to point out that I had potential. I began to work harder than I had ever before and I began to accelerate in every course. This never took a toll on me till the tenth grade, when my mental health started degrading. Anxiety was my first foe. During the beginning of the tenth grade, I had set high expectations for myself and it began to affect my life greatly For instance, after finishing the test, I would think about just one specific question that I thought I completed wrong.…

My books felt like weights beneath my left arm. I sluggishly made my way over to the door, put my hand on a cold silver handle, and deserted the solace of the common room. I was already halfway up the flight of stairs owing to the common room’s elevation, but I didn’t want to finish journey. Each step represented a new obstacle: a hard test, a bad day, or a tough loss. I had already climbed my way through third form and most of fourth, but the metaphorical steps ahead looked too imposing for me.…

Growing up I was always the tallest kid in the class. Whenever class picture day rolled around, I knew that I was in the front of the line because of my height. It was somewhat embarrassing when all the boys were shorter than I, and the girls made me feel bad for how out of place I was. Not only did my height provide social awkwardness, it also administered the constant, never ending struggle of finding garments long enough. Whenever my mom or grandmothers wanted to take me back to school shopping, I made excuses of “I don’t need any more habiliments” or “I do not feel good, all of the sudden…”…

The door opened quietly, and I hoped I would leave soon without a hitch. I felt very awkward in this situation, and was glad to leave it and move down the wooden stairs. The steps I took were gentle and quiet, as though I was about to be killed should I make a noise. The silence was to my liking, but I had become to use to it. I leapt backward up over five stairs, scared out of my wits at the thought of people finding me in this place, wherever it was.…

The rest of the year was great to me, I finally saw the rainbow. I gained many new friends and I was/am doing fairly well in my classes. I overcame an obstacle of mine that was really large, and I am proud of myself for doing so. I finally got to see what it looks like when the clouds part. I went from being a stress mess to a straight success (maybe not success yet, but soon).…

The first book that was ever read to me in the English language was called “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” --the book that allowed me to become the person I am today. Can you believe that? A children’s book defines the journey of my continual life. Inspiration comes to people in many forms and ways yet this one book read to me by my first-grade teacher, Mrs. Jenks, stuck with me till this day. “I do not belong here” was the first thought that came into my head on the bright, sunny day of September 7th, 2005.…

Track and field has been the highlight of my high school life. The social aspect, the large assortment of events from which to choose, and the people I met are things I will always treasure. If you could build up quick bursts of speed, long and triple jumps suited you.…

High school changes people. They express themselves, become opinionated, and they start to look at the world differently as they experience things they have never encountered before. A wise Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” This quote is an excellent way to describe my experience in high school.…

Being thrown in all directions during my school years, I’ve learned that when faced with conflict, I need to trust myself and what I want. If I let others change my course of life and my lifetime goals, I’ll never be happy. I’ll never do what I want. In order to conquer my feelings of inadequacy and really know what I wanted in life, I needed to do a soul searching, which I’m sure is the purpose of high school. Regardless, I refuse to be a puppet being dragged along by someone else’s string; I want to learn and grow, so that's what I intend…
