The Autobiography of a Wooden Baseball Bat I remember back when I used to be a big, healthy ash tree in central North America. I had all my friends living next to me. Oak, Maple, Pine, they were all where there with me. Then one day it all turned around. I stepped out of the imaginary batter's box took a few deep breaths, tightened my batting gloves, and then stepped back into the batter’s box, thinking about finally getting a good cut. Hawaiian Punch full of Rum and something else. Boy, did I have one hell of a hangover the following day! Another guy walked into the barracks later that afternoon and asked if anyone wanted to rent motorbikes and drive over to Phoenix City, Alabama (which was considered to be the danger zone). Deciding to get out for a while, we went to the bus stop and took a ride to the bike rental shop in downtown Columbus, Georgia. Taking off over the bridge to Alabama to see what all the fuss was about, we ended up at the bars in ‘Combat Alley’ We checked them out just long enough to get an idea that the area was no big deal, before deciding to ride back to downtown Columbus, feeling a little better on the return trip.…

Districts is by far the biggest meet of the year where all swimmers attempt to break personal records and qualify for state. This shaving of the heads promises a possible time drop of maybe one tenth of a second and also builds a sense of team unity. In 2013, my freshman year of high school, I refused to partake in this sacred ritual.…
