Personal Narrative: Nia At The School Of Counselling

Decent Essays
Nia was referred to counseling by the school after she went missing for three days and after parent found out Nia was engaging in reckless sexual activities. I picked Nia from her class and both walked to the library where our first session was to take place. She seemed emotionally deflated and grumpy. Nia was wearing oversized and rather worn out clothes. She wore a boy’s brand-name jacket, a pair of washed out jeans and heavily worn brand-name sneaker shoes. There was an angry and upset look in her face and seemed almost as if she dragged herself as she walked. When I introduced myself, Nia had very articulate questions about how and why the program runs and quickly expressed confidentiality

320). Lisa came from a low-income family, was sexually abused, and had a stressful childhood in addition to the abuse. I would also argue that her mother has a mental health disorder, which impacted how she interacted with Lisa in general, but most importantly impacts how she responded to Lisa’s needs as an infant and regarding the trauma she experienced. Lisa also presented with impulsive behaviors, for example, she abused substance and engaged in high-risk sexual activity on numerous occasions. Lisa was almost proud of her sexual encounters and her substance abuse.…

Amanda Perring carefully stepped off the bright yellow school bus onto the clean, asphalt driveway leading to her parent’s garage. Her house was a classic, one story suburb on the outskirts of Los Angeles, located in middle class neighborhood where no one had to worry about money but there wasn't much extra to spend. Her mother and father were both respected doctors and were almost never home when Amanda was. Every day on the bus, she would sit at the very back with no one else, completely silent the entire way home, most often reading a book. When she had first moved to her new school a few years ago, Amanda had been the easiest kid to pick on with her high grades and care about school.…

In the Human Services field I am very passionate about working with people in the deaf culture. I am passionate about working with this population because I know American Sign Language and I feel a connection to the community. Learning ASL took a long time and allowed me to be engaged in many events in the deaf community. I believe people in this population are not given nearly as much attention or opportunities as they should be. The lack of equal access to education, jobs, and basic interactions that hearing people take for granted is not fair and puts this population at a disadvantage therefore making it important for people to want to work with this group of people.…

This sickness I thought was to embarrassing to talk about, making it impossible to seek help, left me feeling alone in the dark. This sickness ruined friendships, without me realizing it. This sickness that made getting out of bed a struggle for me.
