Personal Narrative: Neil Armstrong Middle School

Improved Essays
I walked into Neil Armstrong Middle School's gym, nervous as can be, not ready for basketball tryouts. The only reason I was there was because my dad and sister wanted me to play. I also wanted to play a sport this year, but I didn't think it would be basketball. It was so loud it sounded like someone was yelling in my ear and playing music at the same time. When I tried out for the basketball team during the winter of my freshman year, I hadn't even considered the possibility of not making the team. Before that year, I had played on travel and middle school teams. I knew that I wasn't the best player on the court, but I scored a few points a game, and I played decent defence. For the duration of the tryout practices, I thought that I was doing well, but apparently the coach did not consider me a good fit for the team. After a meeting with the coach on the last day of tryouts, I was forced to go home with a heavy heart and a tight stomach.…

Have you ever heard your parents laugh at your dreams? I was furious when they laughed at my goal of making it to the NBA. It’s like having your best friend betray you for no reason. At first I was confused as to why they would laugh, but I started to think about this one thing. They think that because they have never played sports and that they are short that I will never be tall enough to play.…

When I decided to play basketball in eighth grade, it was a big shock. I had no idea what a complicated game basketball really was. I thought that fourth grade basketball camp and the things I had learned in P.E. would be enough to be successful on a team. The anger and disappointment that I felt throughout that season was new to me. I contemplate those feelings that came while I was on the eighth-grade girls’ basketball team.…

Growing up, I was an immensely shy child. In my pre-teen years, I often had trouble with confrontation. This led to people taking advantage of my meek demeanor and I was frequently the target of bullying despite my consistent efforts to be as likeable as possible. As the years passed by, I eventually had conformed into the typical bookworm who enjoyed reading obscure literature for hours in a comfy chair at the local library.…

I wasn’t much of an outdoorsy type of person, I would rather be watching television or playing a video game in my house. Growing up my older brother and sister seemed to always be outside playing basketball or football or swimming in the pool. My sister was involved in basketball with school for a lot of time, but then took up tennis and became very skilled at it. My brother would always be outside playing sport with friends and would do recreation leagues for sports like basketball and flag football. Me on the other hand would rather be playing Gameboy or watching cartoons than going outside or participating in something athletic.…
