Personal Narrative: My Writing Style

Each of us has their own writing style. Some work best with music in the background, and some work best in silence. Others like to organize their ideas, and others find that jotting all of their ideas down on paper is a better method of writing. For me, writing an essay is a time consuming process. First, I like to write one sentence at a time, and then go back and revise it. I find that starting off with one sentence and going back to revise it helps with keeping the flow of the paragraph. Next, I like to brainstorm ideas for the next sentence that ties in with the previous sentence. This step tends to be the most prolonged for me because I will almost always brainstorm at least three to four sentences. Brainstorming sentences helps me with writing because it helps me narrow down my options for picking the best fit for a sentence. This step also helps with keeping my essay from becoming a bit boring. If I narrow down my sentences, the more interesting one will always be chosen. …show more content…
I tend to keep my vocabulary effortless when I first start to write so I can go back and change it. Keeping my vocabulary simple until I’ve completely finished writing down all of my “brainstorm” sentences helps me. This is because when I go back and change it, I can simultaneously correct any grammar and punctuation errors. After I correct any errors, I’ll go back and add any sentences or delete any sentences to better the flow of my essay. I almost always have one or two run-on sentences, so I will go back and revise those sentences. The flow of my sentences tends to always be a bit off topic when I have only written a rough draft, so going back and correcting any mistakes always helps with the flow of my

Unless I have a very strict and short deadline, my writing process begins with thinking and reading about the topic or subject matter of my paper. I don’t do a structured free writing or idea mapping session, but rather just read a bit to get familiar with the subject matter and to get my brain thinking about the subject. Once I am ready to begin writing. I start with the thesis statement is on the topic, is formatted correctly, and matches the purpose of the essay.…

The most crucial step of my writing processes is letting my mind go wild and my fingers move freely. Whenever I write anything, I always let myself write whatever is on my mind at that exact second. Even if it doesn’t make 100% sense or isn’t exactly on topic, I’ll type it out. When I was writing my essay, I didn’t stop to fix anything until the very end. When I finished writing, I looked for mistakes.…

Being able to write has always been one of my biggest challenges in school. In high school, I would always struggle with the length of my essays because I was always taught that five sentences were enough to complete one paragraph. Each of my paragraphs only had one transition, which I would regularly start with, and my sentences had minimal detail. That was until I started English 1A and began to learn very important concepts for a nicely written assignment. For example, I have learned that transitions help your essay flow smoothly when you are adding new ideas or changing to a different subject.…

This helps me to better focus on my organization structure of my paper as well as helping me showcase my ideas more successfully.…

After reviewing my ideas and deciding exactly what the best approach would be to address the given prompt, I write a rough draft, then I start typing my final copy. As I am typing my final draft I revise sentences, correct spelling and grammar, and occasionally add or take away a sentence. Once my essay is completely written, I use the spelling and grammar check and fix mistakes that it may find. I then print my essay out and let a couple people read it and fix any mistakes they find. I ask them for suggestions on how to combine sentences and have a better variety of sentences.…

A technique taught to me in highschool but was never put to use and just now has been reiterated by the person mentioned in the previous paragraphs Mrs. Moebs. This has shown to be a successful tip when trying to do research and enhancing transition sentences. As said by smart-words.org “transition words are essential, since they not only connect ideas, but also can introduce a certain shift, contrast or opposition, emphasis or agreement, purpose, result or conclusion”. Provided you put things in order the easier it is to follow along as the reader. In addition, writer Jesse Lopez from The Collegian magazine has said “if it’s a good outline, writers can simply flesh it out to make the first draft.”…

The Writing Process According to Don Murray (1972), “The writing process itself can be divided into three stages: pre-writing, writing, and rewriting” (p.2). the statement is true for most American students today. But Writing can be challenging due to a different personality, background, and culture. For someone like me, a student for whom English is not the first language, it is often difficult to know the correct format and really express your true understanding of what you’re reading. I remember my English teacher used to talk about what the writing process meant, and I never understood until this day.…

The writing process is different and unique to all individuals; many people follow the ideal steps of prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing as opposed to others taking shortcuts, skipping steps, and going straight to editing. The writing process is the course one takes to get from prewriting to the publication of their essay; since everyone is a different, their writing process will also be different. For me, I believe that following the ideal writing process steps are a tremendous help to organizing my essay and spacing out the work throughout the time the assignment is assigned. To begin writing an essay I must first prewrite; to prewrite is to brainstorm ideas from the prompt by outlining, diagramming, clusterings, or…
