Personal Narrative: My Writing In The Classroom

Throughout the quarter my writing has strengthen. Last year I honestly had no idea how to write a decent paper. My English teacher was also trying to get her doctorate and she didn’t have the time to be an effective teacher. She tired her best but really shouldn’t have been our teacher. She had to step up because our original teacher flaked out on us, and I really admire her for that. Though it wasn’t her fully fault I was taught nothing last year, all my knowledge of commas and sentence structure, let alone paper structure, came from middle school. I’m still not super great with grammar and sentence structure, however I’m learning to identify it in my own writing. Re-reading my reading responses, I can spot places that I could have worded sentences better. For example I wrote, “If they were being forced to work at hooters like prostitutes are by a pimp then it's not fun or what they want thus making it not okay.” I recognize now that I should have wrote, “If they are being forced to work, like prostitutes are by their pimp, it’s not fun, or what they want, thus making it not okay.” At least I think that’s how it should look. I’m still learning, and hoping my skills will increase as I continue my education. …show more content…
I write out a prewrite and then spit out the worst version of my paper, not worrying about spelling or grammar. Then I go through my paper revising and edit it like crazy. I edit, and edit, and edit, until I can’t think of anything else to edit. Then I go through and pick on my word choice, choosing more academic words that have a more precise meaning and that are probably longer to fill my page quota. In fact I’m doing that with this very paper. I often spend a lot of time on papers just planning and revising, like one should, but I also spend a great amount of time editing. I feel like it’s very effective to get a quality

“Revising” In Joseph Harris’s article, “Revising”, Harris emphasizes the differences between drafting, revising, and editing, and the impact that each of these elements has on drafting a well-written paper. Harris dubbs the first step “drafting”, or formulating the content of the paper. Drafting involves the development of ideas into a larger body of text that can be easily followed. The next step in this process is “revising”, or further developing and adjusting the current body of text. Harris reaffirms that revising is not simply editing for spelling in grammar, but rather revising focuses on building upon the text that is already developed.…

With my process of writing I try to take a lot more time typing and figuring out what I’m going to write and do it so I don't have to revise as much. I really try to not make mistakes so I save time revising and can move on to whatever I need to do. For example this project I've thought about what I want to type to minimize my revision…

My classroom procedures are very clear, which the class has become familiar with over the semester. Students are to come in from their special class and grab their materials and go sit on the carpet and get ready for math to begin. These are expectations that should be memorized by now. Many of them do this and it contributes to the flow of the classroom and the engagement level of the entire groups. Students are expected to pay attention to the speaker during the mini-lesson by facing their way and not playing with any other items.…

On the first day of class, I felt pretty confident about my level of skills as a writer, but little did I know there were a lot of aspects in my writing that could be improved. As time progressed and we learned more about colloquial language and little things I could change in my essays to further advance and improve my writing. Now, I feel even more confident about my writing and know that all of these little changes I can make in my writing create a better flow of ideas and a higher level of formality. I feel that throughout this semester I have been greatly challenged as a writer and have advanced the most that I ever have in writing within such a short period of time. I have put in a lot time and effort into this class in order to create…

The writing process has a lot of steps; some of those steps worked well for me such as: generating ideas, listing supporting ideas and details, and drafting. The only reason for why it worked well is because, I just have to write freely, and randomly without any care even if I wrote some unnecessary and meaningless ideas. The same also goes when I draft; grammar, organization, and spelling were the least of my problems because, first drafts are not perfect. However, there are steps that have not worked well for me; for the reason that, doing those steps took me a long time to do. Those steps are polishing, and forming a good topic sentence; they took me almost an hour and a half to finish.…

There are good writers and there are good writers who work hard to become better. Mrs. Fiske, my English teacher junior and senior year of high school always told me that I was one of the best writers in my class but I could always be better. Spelling has always been one of my strong suits and I always get bothered when people can’t spell simple words. I’m pretty good at writing essays but I do not enjoy writing them at all.…

It is a very important part of my writing process to put a paper down for at least twenty-four hours, which hopefully include a decent amount of sleep, and come back to it with a fresh mind. I think this gives me a much better understanding of what needs to be developed and what is useless information. Depending on time constraints for the paper I will try to pick it back up the next day and go through the first reread, which will be my first attempt a the first step of my revising…

I first began to implement the idea of writing a shitty first draft in my research review article. Although I had edit this assignment multiple times, I received it back with recommendation for further revisions. For me, this emphasized that revision is a continuous process, and my writing can always improve if I take time to look at it with a fresh pair of eyes. I believe that I have accomplished one of the course goals, which is understanding the stages that would result in the production of competent, professional writing. As this semester comes to an end, I continue to utilize the writing process of creating a first draft that would need several revision in order to produce a quality end…

My writing experience: I didn’t start to read until I was in first grade. Every week we would go to library to check-out two books and take a test on the books we read on a computer. Every day in English we read a short story to ourselves then we would play games dealing with the story to make it fun. To be honest I never really did a lot of writing in Elementary , Middle, or High school so I can’t pinpoint when I started writing. In essay writing I learned its always good to express yourself with your own opinion.…

Who doesn’t struggle with writing? I know I always have struggled with writing, for the longest time I didn’t even really understand the differences in sentences, and it is something that’s still confuses me a little bit. To be completely honest I sometimes procrastinate longer than I should when it comes to writing, so I don’t always review the finished product the way I should. Life gets in the way occasionally, and I attempt to convince myself that I have plenty of time to finish they assignment. This particularly gave me problems in high school.…

By doing this I can improve my paper and make corrections. It also brings ideas in my head and helps me with my writing. I am positive of this.”…

If I was writing a paper that required a specific number of paragraphs or pages I would typically plan my paper using the four square method. If I was writing an important paper I would write a rough draft, then as I was typing it I would revise it and fix any mistakes I found. One thing that remained consistent in my writing process, no matter the type of paper, is after I wrote the paper I would try to find more grade level appropriate words instead of the simple words I originally used. While writing essays for this class I came to find it is better to combine my writing processes to write the best possible essay I could. I found the best steps for me to take in writing my paper are to write my ideas down in some form.…

What vivid moments do you experience when reading, writing, or activities that involved them? Or what frustrated you about reading and writing? My experience with reading and writing start with my teacher from elementary all the way up to my teachers in high School, Ripley, Tennessee school district, and University of Memphis. My teachers during school remind me about the things I must do for class more than my college professors. In Ripley, Tennessee their district held up high standard on students with reading and writing.…

It’s hard to proofread or edit a paper that I have just finished writing. Everything is still so familiar, and I tend to skip over a lot of errors. Setting the paper aside for a few hours or days, then returning to it afterwards really helped me in detecting much of the errors. When my head is clear of what I’ve written I can take a fresh look at the paper and see what is really on the page. Just the distance I gave myself from the papers I wrote throughout this semester was all I needed to retrieve the most errors I could from what I previously wrote.…
