Personal Narrative: My Work Experience With Manual Labor

Improved Essays
I’ve always despised the idea of working, like having to do manual labor, or even sitting in an office building typing on a computer for 7 hours. Just the thought of having to sit down and do that boring, and possibly challenging work for so long made me sad. I always wanted to be a scientist and make big discoveries, maybe even work for NASA and help with space programs! So the idea of doing something in the line of manual labor was never a possibility for me, just the thought of it was just unappealing. And ironically, it just so happened to be my very first experience with working, helping out my sister's boyfriend with sprinkler repair! This work experience happened this past summer, in late July, my mom thought it would be a brilliant

Clarence, I agree with you completely that older generations follow the motto “a hard day’s work for an honest day’s pay”. I work with a few older employees and they work 5x harder than some of the younger employees I work with. I also received a 35 on my EI test which I was not surprised of either. I have a very high work ethic and have very little time for play in my job. I do need to learn to put myself in others shoes; sometimes this is very hard for me to do.…

Life As a Domestic Servant During the late 19th century the Irish population within New York had significantly grown. Immigrants were forced to move from Ireland as a result of the great famine. As the city transitioned into Victorian values, the demand for female servants had increased. Most individuals classified domestic work as one of the lower status; however, it was the perfect job opportunity for an immigrant. Irish immigrants could easily find employment in American homes without any training or experience.…

I have always been interested in learning and using new ideas. Throughout my life, I have invariably drawn from my life experiences, newly learned ideas and my continuing education to help problem-solve sensibly and realistically allowing me to move forward or help others reach their goals. Although I have no formal teaching experience, in my past work and involvement in organized sports, I have repeatedly used the Progressive philosophy. When dealing with 13 & 14 year olds many situations arise such as bullying, personality clashes or simply not understanding a drill or play. I deal with these situations by asking questions to stimulate a discussion, allowing them to draw on past experiences; positive or negative, consequently allowing them to come up with a solution or grasp the knowledge they are seeking.…

The Salvage Yard I have been going to The Salvage Yard for about a year now, and I have seen many things. I have seen a man pretend to have a heart attack, so he could get some attention, I have witnessed someone decide to give his life to God, but what I saw last Sunday just filled my heart with infinite joy. The Salvage Yard is a place that feeds the homeless or just anyone that walks through the door. Most of the time it reeks of poor hygiene and smoke, and of course the stench of whatever we cooked for them that Sunday, mixes in with it to make a smell that just makes your nose want to fall off.…

“Congratulations!!” read one post on a friend’s Facebook wall, the day after she landed an office job in her field. “So amazing!” read another. “Are you ready for your big-girl job?” asked a third well-wisher, accompanied by a GIF of Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope. “I can’t believe I finally have a real job” was the text she sent me a few days later, from the comfort of her desk, where she had been hired to do operations work for an organization she had once, a few years prior, interned for.…

I became more than a “handyman;” I was a well-established landscaper. Although I did not necessarily enjoy lawn work, my landscaping career took off when my neighbor recruited me to mow and weed whack his yard for a small salary. My vocation began when I was fourteen years old, and back then it took me two hours to execute, but today I have it down to an artform and can complete my assignment in less than forty-five minutes. Society typically sees manual labor as an occupation that a man would do and I am always interrogated with “Isn’t it hard?”, “Why do you do it?”, or my personal favorite “Why don’t you just try…

Everyone worked together and treated each other like a family so that helped me to be comfortable working with them.
