Personal Narrative: My Work During The First Lego League Event

Decent Essays
I believe that my work during the First Lego League event has been extraordinary, this is because I’ve been a part of the whole process, not only the robot part which was what I was assigned to. I learned a lot of new things about the orca and the whales in-general.

Obviously there are things that could have been done differently during and before the event, such as our time schedule, and the amount of time we got to work with First Lego League,. As I found the time we got, was really short especially for the group assigned to programming the robot.

There are also stuff that I wish we could change before leaving to Bodø for our Scandinavian final, such as giving us more time to work with it, as there are a lot of things that could be improved

Though we did not win, the competition was an eye opener. It taught me two important things – teamwork and leadership. I learnt to not only assign tasks to members but to also create a sense of coherence and harmony that would bring out the full potential of the team. Moreover, the competition debunked many of the impractical ideas that I had on building and programming the robots.…

A large portion of my volunteer time is dedicated to coaching my school’s First Lego League team. FLL is a robotics program where team members learn to create computer programs, effective engineering principals, and build problem solving skills. Our team meets twice a week for three hours after school to focus on solving a set of challenges given to us by the competition. In addition to our weekly meeting times I have continued to build my own understanding of robotics and the FLL program at various meetings of FLL coaches throughout the state. This dedication to helping Cottonwood’s FLL team succeed really paid off when we advanced to the state championship as a rookie team!…

It was October 16, 2012. I was in seventh grade, just a boy to become someone or something. We were loading the bus with our two coaches, Coach Voss and Coach Larh. Coach Voss the offensive coach who liked to make us run, and coach larh, our Defensive coach who taught me everything I known about the defensive side of the ball. This was a big game for me and my fellow teammates this game was going to set the tone for the rest of the season to show that we can be successful.…

My recurrent shoulder dislocations were a constant battle, but a battle in which I’d always won. After a dislocation, all it took was a couple weeks of physical therapy before I could return to the baseball field. Although, after my fifth dislocation I ended up sitting in the hospital awaiting the results of my MRI with an uncomfortable feeling in my stomach. My surgeon soon returned with news that my injury required a season-ending surgery. Thus, I had a Bankart Repair on my throwing shoulder, and afterwards, although devastated, I supported my teammates from the sidelines for the entirety of the season.…

Besides teaching, I started a cross country program at the school. Unfortunately, because of the low number of boys in the school and their overall lack of interest in competing, I was only able to initially begin a girls team. Leading the team was the daughter of the man who had originally informed me about the opening at the school. But, pleasantly what I soon found out was there was a virtual all-star team of girl runners at that school in grades six, seven, and eight which translated into immediate success.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…

When I was about six years old, my friends who were about 12 or 13 at the time invited me to the baseball field. The one bad part was that to get to the baseball field we had to cross a major road to get there, but at least there was a light. My parents told me I could only go if we were being driven, but I went anyway. It was scary crossing the street, mostly because we did not cross at the crosswalk. We were too lazy to walk down the neighborhood and cross at the light.…

All my life I was always put down for being small. Standing at 4’11 now as a freshman in college I get comments on my height every day. So when my basketball coach at the end of my freshmen year of high school blew her high-pitched whistle stopping practice to say “Why is the shortest person on the team jumping high than all of you!” I felt the biggest swell in my chest. That moment in practice was a significant turning point in my life that proves I am capable of accomplishing anything with hard work and dedication.…

I have three years of event planning experience, mostly from when I was a resident assistant and being involved in Greek Life. Being involved in Greek Life also presented event planning opportunities.
