Personal Narrative: My Withdrawal From College

While I did withdraw from four courses in college, all of these withdrawals were considered “withdrawn without prejudice”; had I withdrawn because of a low grade, this would be noted on my transcript as a WF for withdraw / fail. Any class I withdrew from was not essential to my major or to my graduation requirements. I feel that these withdrawals are in no way indicative of my academic potential or work ethic. To demonstrate this point, I will detail my reasons for withdrawing from each course. In Fall 2012, I withdrew from Rape Aggression Defense; I had thought this class would be empowering, but it wound up being triggering. I was taking this class purely out of interest, but decided instead to focus on my core academic classes. Further, I withdrew from The Arts for Social Change (a studio art class) in Spring 2013, because I was already taking 21 other credits and again wanted to focus on my core academic courses over an elective. That semester I was taking two advanced …show more content…
As I indicated in my interview, under absolutely no circumstances would I quit the corps. Currently, I work at least 50 hour weeks with City Year, often with no break in the day; I work through lunch every single day to ensure I am meeting my students' needs, and I know that my hours at TFA will be even longer and more demanding. I am prepared to make this commitment, because I am deeply committed to working as an

The first came in 2005 when I was already doing so poorly in my classes. The second, in the Spring 2015 semester, came when I was hoping to matriculate into medical school in the upcoming fall. I overloaded my schedule with five upper level math courses so that I could graduate in time and withdrew when it became evident I would not be matriculating. “I know applying to colleges is the last thing you want to do right now, but you might change your mind,” a trusted friend told me. It was December of my senior year of high school, and college application deadlines were approaching quickly. I was recovering from a major illness at the time, and wasn’t ready to think about college. My plan was to spend a year living at home and working before I pursued higher education. In the following months, my recovery progressed rapidly.…

“Melissa, levantate rapido” that translates to Melissa you have 5 seconds to get up, and be ready or you will feel the wrath of The Chancla (a weapon used from all Hispanic mother’s to demonstrate authority.) Ten seconds after shouting at the top of her lungs for me to get up, my mother begins her day as she always does, providing my father, younger siblings and I with a meal. Which usually consists of the crispy black goya beans and medium sized white eggs all wrapped in a soft warm corn tortilla, I was thirteen when my mom was seven months pregnant, nearly fainted from exhaustion from cleaning houses, but it was not an option, my father's income was just not sufficient enough to support three children and an incoming one. It was at…

I failed calculus 2 the first time I took it. I heard for years from classmates and friends that calculus 2 was one of if not the hardest course offered at the school. A math major friend even tutored me the semester before, and I thought I was prepared. Unfortunately, the course lived up to its reputation and despite all the forewarning and planning I could not grasp the concepts or deal with the workload. My GPA fell and put me on probation and my subsequent appeal was declined in some sort of triple whammy.…

To be honest, I like all the academic classes I’ve taken. AP Chemistry and AP Calculus are two of my favorites because they were classes in which I had to work hard to maintain a good grade and actually understand the material. Also, I enjoyed AP Comparative Government because I liked learning about the government and politics of foreign countries. However, the class that has influenced me the most was “Journalism.”…

I spent the fall semester of 2016 as a first-year student at Bucknell University. I found most of my classes, with the exception of one were easy, and I did not feel that I was being sufficiently challenged, academically or intellectually. Additionally, the school was too small and could not offer the opportunities and experiences, such as internships, jobs, community and volunteer work, that I desired. The area surrounding the school did not stimulate or excite me, in the way that a city would. I decided after only a semester, to withdraw from Bucknell and am at home for the spring semester.…

I took two classes for the summer of 2016, but the Interpersonal Communication class had me worried the most. I had a training with the army, and that required me to absence from school for two weeks. Unlike my other class, I didn’t have a chance to work ahead of the class with the instructor for the two weeks that I would be missing. Therefore, I was worried that I wouldn’t catch up with my classmates and end up failing the class. However, Ms. Anna was generous and extended the assignment due date for me; she even gave me an extra-credit assignment to replace the credits that I missed during my two weeks in training.…
