“Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway.” - John Wayne
I had been riding and practicing almost every day during the summer, getting ready to perform at Scioto County’s 4-H Western Horse Show on Wednesday during fair week. My 4-H group members were supportive and enjoyed me being their secretary. My mom and sisters were major characters in my story. My passion for riding grew deeply in the show ring that day.
The first show I performed in was the Fun Show on Sunday which starts the fair week; it was terrifying because so many people participated in those classes. Adults and youth can participate in any of the classes as long as they stay within the age limit between kids and adults. The next few days after the Fun Show, I spent

To follow a pattern to show my horsemanship skills with the horse on lead rope. I put the halter and lead rope on my horse, and I waited for my number to be called to enter the arena. A few people went before me and I watched to noticed their mistakes to help me become more mentally prepared as to how I should do it. The next thing I knew, my number was called to go wait in near the gate to enter the ring.
My heart rate increased as I approached the gate, I was nervous and terrified. I felt singled out with numerous people already looking at me before I even entered the arena. The person in front of me seemed calm and collected and I watched them with so much intent. I watched how the judge moved around their horse and focused and planned each of my moves in advance. As the judge wrote down the person’s score and the person leading their horse to the gate of the side of the arena, I felt tense and unable to move from where I stood.
I looked into the arena as the gate opened and I watched the judge as he looked at me, already judging my first impression on him. I walked and trotted the pattern which was given to me, but my horse did not cooperate when I wanted her to trot. I felt like I was fighting her to try to make her trot, and the judge showed mercy and permitted me to retry the trotting portion. When I finished the pattern, I then had to stop my horse to where her hooves lined up

(1)Most movies that I’ve seen that were based on a real story bored me to death, mainly because there was no big dramatic scene of teen drama or fighting. I like dreamy romantic movies that capture your imagination and vigorously strive to meet popular demand. But once I saw the Walt Disney film, Secretariat my mind completely changed, Secretariat opened up my eyes to the history of our world and the horse racing industry. (2)(play part of the race) (3)Secretariat was a horse that defied all odds to be the first horse in 25 years to win the triple crown race. Even with a poor start, being sixth out of the gates, he demonstrated his endurance by passing the competition to achieve first place.…

"Try your hardest, and you will do great," Kathy Steege, my riding instructor, told me. My first year of IEA at Red Acre Farm, I was in 6th grade and I was so excited to start doing more showing. I was starting to ride more difficult horses, and I was aware of the IEA team. At the time all I knew was that it was another opportunity to show without needing to own your a horse, and I wanted to join. As an inexperienced equestrian, Kathy wasn't sure if I'd be able to do the five shows permitted for a rider; we weren't sure if I was experienced enough to be able to compete in them.…

Slipping my boots on, my focus was fully on the task of getting my mare bathed and ready for the barrel race we were heading to that evening. My thoughts racing in my head as I reached for her halter and lead from the hanger on the tack room wall. I've been to barrel races so may times in the past twenty years that I should be at ease, but I'm almost more anxious now than I've ever been before. Walking toward the gate, lost in my thoughts, I'm wondering what the night ahead has in store for my partner and I. When I say "partner" I mean my horse.…

Competition days are long and tiring, but always full of excitement. There is a process as to how the day will go depending on when we perform, where we have to travel, and many other aspects. Most of them start out the same way and go in a similar order every time, but there are always surprises that come along the way during these days. As the day starts on a competition Saturday, the Worthington Kilbourne Marching Band arrives normally in the late morning or early afternoon.…

In the “in-between" I was brought up in the “in-between”. In between two nationalities, families, manners or ways of perceiving the world, there was me who drew all of this in and made it into a person. Born in Brazil to a predominantly Iberian family, I have had one label attached to my head “The outsider”. This way, I felt the necessity to fit in somewhere, and eventually, I found my space on being very active and doing a number of different activities, especially the ones that challenged me physically or intellectually. Programming and learning languages brought up the systematic animal I have always been in a healthy way.…

I’d been interested in horsemanship for a long time, but I never had access to stables. So I was delighted to learn that Susan was an accomplished rider and that she could teach me how to ride. The first time I got on a horse, I felt dizzy. Sitting stiffly, I held too tightly to the horse because I was afraid of falling. Susan corrected my posture patiently and was encouraging throughout our lessons.…

Natural equine behavior has very little to do with the things people ask of them, and it falls on the rider to learn enough horsemanship to ride safely (for horse and rider) and intelligently. Horses can't intuit the reasons for bits, reins and stirrups: it's when horse and rider work together that they construct a language for communicating. Training your horse is important if you want to work together to achieve anything—whether it's basic riding or more complicated activities such as eventing, reining and cutting or dressage. If you plan to take your horse to shows, you will certainly be engaged in some training…

In many ways, individuals often struggle against their fears. The time I experienced this was when I used to ride steers a couple summers ago. It was a hot July day and my dad and I had just finished helping my Rodeo queen sister get ready for carrying flags to start off the rodeo. After when we walked over to the stands to get ready for their riding, I was gearing up to ride one of those beasts they call steers, thinking I was going to get killed.…

I slid to the ground, timer still running, and hopped around idiotically on one leg pointing to my foot to try to convey the shoe was gone. Nobody understood and I looked hysterical. I know I did what was best for my horse, but being mocked for doing the chicken dance on course enforced a new sense of modesty that I couldn’t have gotten anywhere else. Horses have taken away my bombastic sense of self pride, and through the many trials and tribulations, they have taught me to be able to laugh at…
