Personal Narrative: My Volunteering At The SAE Project

Improved Essays
I chose to volunteer at the Humane Society of Camden County (HSCC) for my SAE, when given the project in the begininng of the year. Projects that fall under the placement category, are ones in which you go and get hands on experience as a helper to someone above you. So, my project of volunteering at the HSCC under the authority of those who work there, falls under the placement category for SAE projects. Throughout the process of my project, I had some great experiences. I also gained lots of skills and learned a bunch of valuable lessons. Overall, I enjoyed the time I put into this project by voulunteering.
While volunteering, I had a couple different jobs to do. These jobs include cat cuddling, dog walking, and play time coordinator for dogs. Cat cuddling, being exactly what it sounds like, was simply spending time with the cats at the shelter. This can mean playing with them, cuddling with them, grooming them, or even just letting them out of their kennel for a little while. But, by giving these cats a little of my time, I am making their lives a little easier. The job as cat cuddler helps reduce their stress and socializes them, which helps them get adopted in the long run.

These skills include animal handling, learning the importance of paitence, and learning to stay calm in stressful situations. These skills will help me further along the path towards my future as a veterinarian. The lessons I learned while volunteering were how resposibility and time management are key to being successful, how working with animals can be very difficult, but is very rewarding, how volunteer work is very important to the community and those in it, and how even the littlest things you do for an animal can have the biggest impacts in their lives. Each of these life lessons are very important, and gave me a new out look on

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

There are positive and negative aspects to being an animal shelter veterinarian. The most difficult part of being an animal shelter veterinarian is dealing with the behavioral problems of the shelter animals. “Animal Behavior for Shelter Veterinarians and Staff” supports my view that animal shelter veterinarians are required to deal with serious animal aggression and trauma. Shelter animals tend to have more behavioral problems than animals brought into a regular veterinary clinic. It is absolutely necessary to socialize with animals and read their body language in order to be the most successful shelter veterinarian possible.…

Volunteering at The Salvation Army I realized this was my chance to make a difference. When people hear that a person is “homeless,” I’m sure the first thing that comes to mind is a bum, dirty clothes, a drug addict, and a drunk. However, that is not the case at all. Living in times like these, recession plays a huge role on unemployment rates which eventually leads to homelessness. Not only that but natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy, left thousands of people homeless in New York.…
