Personal Narrative: My Volunteer Experience

How I got to view the world through the eyes of others through my volunteer experiences. When you get to do that and learn something new but other ways to help you are truly outstanding. There are so many things that first attracted me to volunteering. Of course, it was advertised in a way to volunteer for yourself to gain experience however I was attracted by how a little can mean the world to someone else. I help others to simple help, not to gain as advertised.
I got to see through the eyes of a child (ren) who struggles with reading when I was a reading Corps tutor this past fall. You get to understand how much work it takes to sound out a word. You get to feel their vulnerability and trust that they placed in you to help them understand what is being read. By the end of the experience, you rejoice in the little things. You get to see the way their eyes light up when they read a word that they struggled with at the beginning. The small accomplishment to me meant way more to them and they helped me slow down to understand that as I helped open them up to being

They showed me more than colors on a canvas. The pieces are time, pasts and futures they experienced or hope to experience within their lifetime. “A bristles on a paint brush can be more than just a brush” one taught me that it can be a symbol of security handled in the palm of your hand. “In a world of chaos you get to choose the colors” another would say. Artists have found what many look for. They found a peace, passion and fit for their life. Whether painting, drawing, molding, or writing artists venture into a realm of happiness that others journey their whole lives to find. “Money doesn’t matter when you’ve final found something to smile for every day, it just takes your commitment. Then you jump.” The end result is a piece that everyone can view to help find themselves if they look hard

Art can convey different messages to the viewer, for example, the paintings of Circe on slide 41. In the painting to the left Circe seems to be like a lonely and angry queen, but in the painting to the right she seems to be more like a nurturing shepherd. The colors within the painting to the left makes Circe seem broody, but in the painting to the right the lighter colors make her seem joyful and loving. The colors within the painting to the left are much darker.…

From a little girl, until now, I have always been raised on the principle of giving back to your community . For over seven years I have been an active volunteer at the Inidantown Food Pantry. Though it seems like a minute role, it is a very impactful one. Indiantown is a small cited triangulated between Okeechobee, Stuart, and Palm Beach that, by statistics of the 2016 Census, houses just a little over 6,000 people.…

Like any other clinical experience, going into the Salvation Army I set goals for what I would achieve during my learning experience to focus my learning and enrich my knowledge base. My first personal goal was to go into the experience with an open mind and allow myself to learn more about this population and the people I would care for. This goal was achieved because I can talk about moments that I experienced that contributed to my growth of knowledge and awareness to this population. This goal was reached by sitting with multiple individuals over their meal and talk to them about their hardships and what they were going through. This allowed me to share my compassionate heart and listen to people who needed someone to talk to and hear about…

I normally don't post things like this on Facebook but ironically, I came across a fantastic video from the Peace Corps a few days ago... As many of you know, I want to join the Peace Corps after college but many don't really know how I could "waste" my time serving or "why" I would do such a thing... Well, on the video, a Caucasian volunteer stationed in the Dominican Republic took a bus and was immediately asked whether or not he was a Peace Corps volunteer by the driver( based on his skin, eyes and hair color-…

I live my life on a legacy of war survivors. My family's standards toward success have always been a key factor as I was being raised. As a young musician, my grandfather’s optimistic views deteriorated the moment he got drafted for World War II.Appointed as commander in the tanks divison, my grandfather felt his everlasting ego grow as he protected his country. The moment of victory however soon vanished when an oncoming tank shot down my grandfather’s tank, destroying everything in sight. He was able to escape from the commander’s hatch, but as he struggled to get his best-friend out of the tank, the tank exploded.…

I chose to help my local humane society construct a room for cats, improve their exterior walking path, and fix landscaping around a deck. From this project I took away many life lessons, one being, how important service is. By assembling volunteers and spending a great amount of time, totaling over 158 hours, we were able to make a difference for many years to come. Since then, service has become even more significant to me, and I hope to become a dentist so I may serve others and improve their lives. Another vital skill I developed was perseverance.…

First of all, I want to thank you for the phone call and leaving a voicemail. Taking the time out to help a Veteran was something I always wondered about this place. I always ask the question, is this a place for individuals to come every day for work as a lessee/lessor relationship, or does this place really have some sort of substance behind it for Veterans? Well, now I know that in fact it is a place for helping Veterans after all- when you called and thanks!!…

Volunteering is helping the people that are in need, or just wanting to volunteer just because that is something I want to do. If I were to volunteer, I would love to play a part in helping with the Salvation Army. Not only does give to people, it simply shows how to work together. I choose this particular opportunity because I would love to start my own business by giving to those who are in need, letting them know the meaning of giving, and telling them more about God.…
