Personal Narrative: My Volunteer At The Inidantown Food Pantry

Improved Essays
From a little girl, until now, I have always been raised on the principle of giving back to your community .
For over seven years I have been an active volunteer at the Inidantown Food Pantry. Though it seems like a minute role, it is a very impactful one. Indiantown is a small cited triangulated between Okeechobee, Stuart, and Palm Beach that, by statistics of the 2016 Census, houses just a little over 6,000 people. Within that number, there is an estimated twenty-five percent poverty rate, which means that about 1,500 people in this little town are struggling to provide for themselves or their families. This number does not include the amount of homeless people we have who live in the woods or the people who are still struggling financially but not enough to where they are considered poverty stricken.

At the food pantry I work directly with the manager, to ensure that client who comes in gets food. Whenever there are deliveries, I am usually the one who stocks and re-organizes the shelves. I have participated in number food drives, where we are able to give food to over four hundred people in one day and even gone out and hand delivered food to clients who are to sickly or weak to come and get the food themselves.
Though many mat not see my years of dedication at the Food Pantry as a an accomplishment, when your are in my shoes and are able to see the lives that you are affecting, it humbles you as a person and makes you more grateful for the little things that you do

I helped sorting and packaging so many different donated items from individuals and companies. When we walked in the Food bank we had to file out volunteer paper then they took us inside the warehouse to start working on sorting and packaging all kinds of food. I wasn’t sure what I expected when going to my community service for the first time. The place that I choose, the Lincoln Park Community Shelter, resided nearby the Lincoln Park, DePaul campus, so I just thought it would be an easy travel to and from the train station. Walking to the site, it was something that I’m not easily used to at home. Around there, there were clean and beautiful scenery all around. Every block I would walk pass a jogger or a person walking their dog in the peaceful environment.…

When volunteering at West Minnehaha it made me realize things that I didn’t pay attention to before going in. The point was to build relationships, problem solve, what to do in a conflict situation, and step outside of my comfort zone. I learned how to do every single one of those things. I realized that the kids are in need of someone who they can look up to and a dependable person who they can count on. For example, I was looking after a few kids that were doing homework and when walking around I hear a conversation of two kids.…

I was able to volunteer at a local bank that was sponsoring the Lake Park Elementary School for the holiday season. The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. Along with other volunteers, I packaged bags that contained candy, toys, toiletries, a blanket, and a pair of athletic shoes. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…

Although Chester County may be the highest income county in Pennsylvania and ranked the 21st highest in the nation; we still suffer greatly from food insecure families and insufficient means to live by.1 In just this county alone we are seeing an assortment in our annual income from 63% of Coatesville residents earning less than $50,000 a year, to Charlestown, where over 90% of their residents are earning over $50,000 a year. With a population of nearly five-hundred-thousand individuals, nearly 6% are food insecure. That is approximately three-thousand people living in poverty.4 This means that the remaining counties in Pennsylvania have on average more than 2.3% of their population living below poverty level. With only 4.3% unemployed, compared to 6.2% for the entirety of America, it just goes to show how many more are suffering in our country.3…

My experience at the Houston Food Bank was rewarding, fun, and enlightening. It was rewarding knowing that I was filling bags of rice to help those in need. At one point, I went outside and saw a long line of vehicles waiting to get food, and that, made volunteering worth it. It was an enlightening experience because I have always thought the Houston Food Bank was for homeless people, but it is not. It is for working people who have a hard time buying groceries after paying their bills.…

The last week of my internship at the Gallatin Valley Food Bank was spent working on tasks that are completed on a day to day basis by volunteers and the type of work that made up the majority of my internship hours. During the morning on Monday I first watered the garden and then helped to restock the store shelves from the back stock and morning donations. In the Afternoon on Tuesday I helped to box up groceries for customers as they checked out and once again watered the garden. I am confident that I could drop in at any time of day and be able to help out in most situations. The will allow future volunteer work of really any type at the food bank to be feasible.…

Paying it forward or giving back has always been my motto to live by since I was a teenager. I believe I had picked up this quality from my mother. At an early childhood age, I couldn’t grasp or understood why my mom was so kind to everyone that she encounters on a daily basis and especially strangers. She would even open her door to strangers in order to help them get back onto their feet. She truly believes everybody in the world are related to one another, we all are one big earth family.…

My healthcare volunteering experience began in high school when I started volunteering at Baylor Hospital in Grapevine, Texas. There I was assigned papers and files to sort and I occasionally got to shadow various doctors. This went on for a month after I graduated high school and before I started college. In the United States, one of the richest countries in the world, why are so many people in poverty? According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the “official poverty rate in 2014 was 14.8 percent, which means there were 46.7 million people in poverty” (U.S. Census Bureau). Poverty is an important and emotional issue. To understand poverty in the United States, it is essential to look behind these numbers to see the actual living conditions of the individuals the government deems to be poor. The U.S. Census Bureau uses a set of guidelines to determine if families meet that poverty threshold.…

My reactions to the finding a balance class was pretty minimal. I have always been extremely well at managing my time overall. I have a tendency of putting what’s important first so I am very good at getting all of my school work done and making sure that all of my responsibilities are completed before engaging in personal activities. My biggest issue is that I have to make sure that I’m done with everything before I will allow myself to relax and that can be a big problem in the more stressful weeks because I find myself caught up in my school work so I don’t have time to set aside for myself to relax. After discussing the productive times verses the non productive times in class today with our schedules, I have the goal of making sure…

In the food pantry, I got to sort packaged items, mainly cans. Although the spacing is small, there is always work to be done and things to arrange. There is a place for everything and it can get overwhelming when you try to sort the items because there will always be more and more to come. When events such as the Spooky Trot are initiated, food pantry volunteers know what is going to come after that. Food and plenty of it.…

When I was in middle school I was part of a church group called Pathfinders; and being a part meant that every holiday the group would do volunteer work for the community. Around thanksgiving we would collect food, walking door to door, and later give it to a local food kitchen. And around Christmas time there would be a toy collection for families in need. Having this past experience under my belt, it motivated me to volunteer my time with other students from Kean at the local food pantry. Another reason why I chose this volunteer work was because the other options did stick out to me as so impactful as this one.…
