Personal Narrative: My Volleyball Team

Trying out for volleyball was the best decision I made as a freshman. I didn’t know much about the sport at the time; all I knew was that it seemed like a complicated version of ‘Don’t let the balloon touch the ground’. Nevertheless, it seemed fun and I wanted to give it a try. As the years when on, my volleyball team became my community, my second family. The camaraderie you have with your teammates is undeniable; you share an unbreakable bond. You see each other at your highest and lowest points, uniting together to be the best team you can be. You fail and succeed together, forging unforgettable memories along the way. They become your sisters. When the season ends, it feels weird not to see them for hours on end every day. I became passionate when I was recognized by a high school coach at something I thought I was doing inadequately at. Meanwhile, over the time I have developed and was awarded the MVP award. In 2009 at West Middle School, I was in the eighth grade and heard that the school was having tryouts for the new volleyball team. Although I didn’t care too much about it, but my cousin Shantel and…

I was determined to prove to myself that I could play this game. As I was playing my first season, my sister was playing her last. I wanted to improve my skills and be my own player, not only be known as the varsity captain’s little sister. I was exhausted every day after practice, however I eventually gained a deeper understanding of the game and grew to love it. Over the next three years I moved up the team ladder playing on both JV and varsity as a sophomore, finally moving up to varsity as a junior and senior.…

Like all children all I ever wanted was to be big and do big people things. I engaged in a few family members that I would look up to and try everything they did. I use to pretend to go grocery shopping and being a parent at times. At the age of eight, I had worn the worst pain ever and that was watching my five, year old brother getting hit by a car while trying to cross the street riding a bicycle that had a loose chain. I remember him trying to get up and get to me, but a few adults that had witnessed the accident had told him to lay down.…

One situation where I found myself in a fixed mindset was when I was a freshman at Mountain Pointe high school trying to make the baseball team. At the time, I had a half-hearted passion for baseball that made me want to be on the school baseball team, but I felt that everything would come natural to me because I was Dominican. I was quite proud of how Dominicans were typically great at baseball quite naturally it seemed. However, with this knowledge I became highly critical about everything I did when playing baseball at the high school camps before the baseball tryouts. I did not focus on overall improvement as I tried to ensure that every throw, batting, and pitch was perfect.…

The summer going into my junior year, I tried out for the summer baseball team. However, although I had never anticipated there would be a problem with my talent levels, considering I had played freshman and sophomore year, I did not make the roster. I was devastated. In the eight years of my baseball career, this was by far the lowest of lows. When faced with adversity and defeat many people decide to give up and quit.…

This is where the story begins.…

Failure is all around us, for most of us it is a daily occurrence even with little things like failing a quiz or missing a shot in your game. I used to let my failures define me and who I have been especially when I failed to make the Varsity soccer team my junior year. I believed I worked hard and I should have been able to accomplish this goal of mine. I worked hard throughout the summer and tried my hardest to keep up with the other girls so I would make Varsity.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…
