As my years of volleyball went on, it was time for me to hang up my nasty bubble-kneepads and tennis shoes and buy big-girl kneepads and volleyball shoes. As my love for volleyball grew throughout the years, it taught me strengths, weaknesses, and talents I never knew I had.
Seventh and eighth grade was here. First it was school volleyball, then club season came around; however, I was more excited for club than for school volleyball. These years taught me how to work hard and put 110% into everything I do. I also learned how to be disciplined. This quality was learned after having stern one on one talks with coach Mather before every match and especially after every match. I was informed of the mistakes I was making, and continued to stick to the fundamentals which are taught in practice in order to correct and enhance my next performance. All those talks and one on ones shaped me to be the person I am today.
My Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior year were under my belt. Finally Senior year was here. This was the year that all my goals that I wrote and all the hard work I put into my last three years of high school will pay off. It was the first day of practice and we had a bunch of new

When I sat there with my bubble kneepads and tennis shoes, I realized that day sitting there in the gym for the first time that volleyball was more than just a sport in high school. It was the sport that shaped me to be the person I am today, by teaching me discipline, how to speak my mind, how to make new friends, growing out of my comfort zone and pushed me to accomplish things I have never done

Starting first grade I thought we were the top dogs because we got moved down to the bigger playground with the bigger kids. Since they knew we liked kick ball so much they built a kick ball diamond for us. There was just so much to do in the shortest amount of time. Everyday was a new day, I never did the same thing, whether it was playing on the upper part on the monkey bars seeing who could hang the longest or playing football with the guys. I can remember my first year at kickball I was taller than most of the guys because they haven’t hit their growth spurt yet, so everyone wanted me on their team because I was the only girl once again that was better than most of the guys.…

In high school, it can seem like the most important thing in life. I, fortunately, was involved in many other activities to fill up my time. I could not play volleyball my sophomore or junior year. This really upset me because I love the sport. While sitting on the side lines, I had a decision to make: sit here bitterly and wish I could be playing, feeling sorry for myself, or cheer my team on and try to be a positive impact on them.…

Never in a million years would I have dreamed of making varsity as a freshman, especially for a team that had just won back-to-back state championships. Throughout middle school, I had to overcome adversity associated with being a “science nerd.” When people started to discover my academic aptitude, I was labeled a “nerd” who couldn’t be athletic. I wasn’t about to let this stereotype define me, so I strove to invalidate it. Since I joined volleyball two years after most of my peers, I was put on the “B-team” throughout junior high.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…

In middle school I had the opportunity presented to me to play club volleyball. There would be lots of practices and it would be very time consuming but the part that my parents didn’t like was the fact that the tournaments would be Sunday morning over church hours. I wouldn’t be able to go to church for almost 5 months in a row. My parents didn’t like this, so they told me that I wasn’t able to participate. I whined and complained for weeks hoping to change their mind but nothing could.…
