Since the age of four, I have attended the KIPP Houston Southwest campus. In my time at KIPP Houston High School and KIPP Academy Middle School, I have taken many AP courses expanding my knowledge about this world both culturally and politically. Being at KIPP has not only taught me to not procrastinate and waste valuable work time but to also take advantage of the class time that I have with my teachers in order for me to ask questions and understand the material taught in class. KIPP has taught me many skills preparing me for life, for instance, knowledge of working on a computer as well as helping me improve my Spanish speaking skills since I was four. In the academic-based curriculum, I developed a love for reading and writing; moreover, …show more content…

I arrived at Rancho Buena Vista High School at 12:00 pm. I waited in a line for about 20 minutes until I reached to the security section. Before we could enter Rancho Buena Vista’s Stadium, we had to be checked for weapons or anything dangerous. I took everything from my pockets and placed them on the table where the securities took a look. Then I was patted down and walked through a metal detector.…

Since its founding in 1994 by Mike Feinberg and Dave Levin in a Houston classroom of 47 5th-graders, KIPP.org has aided in the development of education, skills, and valuable skills that enhance children’s ability to advance onto higher education. As fifth grade educators in Houston’s impoverished and crime-filled Third Ward, Mike and Dave witnessed first hand the need for children to have a path towards high-quality college prep instruction and high-quality mentorship. With their determination, KIPP has continued to grow, and has proven itself pivotal to the communities it serves. In fact, by 1999, KIPP.org’s two middle schools in Houston and New York City ranked among some of the best-performing public charter schools in their communities.…

Walking into Kekionga Middle School I noticed a lot of differences from schools that I had visited previously. The most visible one being the school’s population and location. I had never observed at an urban school and have never felt such a cultural difference between me and the students. With a school population that was so diverse and not within the same background as I was, I immediately started thinking about my future teaching career and what I would do in that kind of atmosphere. I later on asked Mrs. Parker why she chose this school and said that it was because she went to Fort Wayne Community Schools all of her life, so she did not feel change at all.…

It was a normal Tuesday at good ol’ Freeburg Community High School. Our rambunctious lunch group sat around the table to enjoy the lunch of the day, chili. Now you see, I had brought my lunch, but I wasn’t allowing that stop me from enjoying a steaming bowl of chili. My bowl of chili warmed my hands, heart, stomach, my esophagus when it was occasionally too hot, and eventually my lap. Between all of the jokes and laughter I hadn’t noticed that my hands were shaking a tad more than normal; if I had noticed, I would have done the smart thing and set my bowl down rather than hold it.…

“You must get an education. You must go to school, and you must learn to protect yourself. And you must learn to protect yourself with the pen, and not the gun”(Josephine Baker). Growing up in Southwest Philadelphia and Upper Darby, I have seen a lot of my peers turn their backs on education due to the hardships of their urban school environment. Even though everyone who goes to Shakopee High School knows about this situation, they do not know how much it has significantly affected my life. My life changed last year in so many ways. In some ways this has given me more opportunities, but in most cases this event has negatively changed everything around me. Worst of all it has made me lose many friends, given me a bad reputation, and has made everyone think that I am someone that I am not. People I had never met did not like me, discriminated against me in some situations; but on the other hand, it has showed me who my real friends are because they continued to persevere by my side and stuck with me through all of the tough times.…

Before attending Wilmington Early College High School (WECHS), I was not satisfied with my personality, nor was I happy with the way I was perceived by other people. Most would think that I should have been confident because in middle school I was in the AIG program. However, I never truly felt satisfied with myself. I always got good grades, but I never felt like I earned good grades. Although I was making straight As and Bs, it was always relatively easy to earn those marks in middle school.…

The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…
