Personal Narrative: My Visit To Star Point School

Decent Essays
My visit in the 2nd Grade reading class at the Star Point School was a very interesting one. One thing that made an impression on me was the use of a clicker. A clicker was used to keep them in rhythm. Every time the children would say a word or repeat anything back to the teacher, you would hear a sharp click sound. I personally did not like the clicker at all. It seemed similar to training an animal. I think the children could have gotten the rhythm without the clicker. I feel as if the click actually hurt the children's learning environment more than helped it. Due to the fact that the kids were so dependent on when to speak and how to speak, the learning aspect gets left behind. The aspect of self-thinking becomes forgotten and is based off of memorization. I observed children saying the words and looking in different directions due to the fact that they had memorized everything already. Speaking in rhythm with the clicks instead of the steady rhythm of speech is something the children were not really familiar with. The words were rarely used in sentences and the speech didn't seem very realistic.
Another thing I noticed was the feel of the classroom, it was very military-like. There was always a timer being set. The children's lack of laughter, and overall

Children were taught what they needed to know with the emphasis of leaning on a teacher for direction. I considered it a stricter view of essentialism because the teaching style did leave out the students going into deeper thought. The second thing that I related to class, was the thought that a teacher needs to know how to teach a wide variety of backgrounds. This class was all kids with a special need and a teacher needs to be able to know how to handle her students in a way that is productive to them and her. Otherwise there will be no learning in the

What are your thoughts about these methods? The teaching methods at the beginning was to use an interrupter to speak to the children. Then they were given pencils and slates to draw and write on. The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

In 2006, I began my journey at The Valley School as a first grade student. Moving over from my previous school, which I had attended from the time I was three until I was six years old, was fairly smooth. I had friends who made the switch with me and, being the social butterfly I was, making new friends was a breeze. In the first few years as a student, I saw Valley move into three buildings.…

I started attending Lone star college right after high school, at first, I began with the typical high school graduate state of mind, which was that college was going to be a breeze and that it would all be fun and games; more worried about what was going on in my social life rather than studying the books. Especially since I had no real responsibilities to handle or much life experience. Around my first year of college, I started dating this girl and not long after we conceived our first son. Once this happened, my focus slowly shifted from school to working a full-time job at a welding shop in order to provide for my family. I still tried to attend class but was unable to find the balance between work, school and family and this reflected my grades.…

My time at St. Cecilia school is never going to be forgotten. St. Cecilia has shaped me to be the person I am today spiritually, academically, and my friendships with other people. St. Cecilia gives many opportunities to do so.…

As I looked out of the bus window, half awake from sleeping on the bus ride, I saw a large blue structure with flashing lights at the top jutting into the partly cloudy spring sky. To the right of it was another one, similar looking, but was yellow and red and was somehow even taller than the blue one. I then nervously looked down the aisle out the windshield at the three lane road, each lined with cars and other buses, that was headed toward the island-like peninsula. As we lurched slowly down the road a little bit at the time, a gate appeared with lettering on top that read, “Welcome to Cedar Point.” Just two weeks ago, Mrs. Scharpenberg came into our 2nd period Advanced Placement Language class with a signup sheet, stating that we could go on the annual AP field trip to Cedar Point.…

My TE-100 class went to Barr Middle School in Grand Island, Nebraska and Northeast Elementary in Kearney, Nebraska. Due to a conflict I was unable to attend the Barr Middle School visit and went to Walnut Middle School in Grand Island, Nebraska instead. I was afraid to sharpen a pencil in second grade. My most vivid elementary school memories spring from instances when I was being reprimanded by an adult for doing something wrong. I did everything in my power to avoid those dreadful moments, but they still presented themselves on occasion. All teachers performed great jobs at creating a unified classroom of learners. The students have favorable moments to act as chiefs and helpmates with individual responsibilities; their jobs are placed in a pocket folder on the wall. Students could participate in classroom activities in a variety of ways. Ms. Atkinson, Bell, Waldoky, and Gullekerson used a rocking chair during their teachable moments. I noticed around the classrooms, the teachers modeled supportive interactions with the students, and encouraged prosocial behavior.…

When I walked into the preschool classroom, I noticed it was very large and very spacious which allowed enough space for each child. Natural light, provided there was no glare in the room, was able to help students learn more effectively. Upon entering the class, I quickly noticed all the children curiously turn to look who I was while they were having large group time for half an hour. During that time, they sang songs, had calendar time and the teacher did an overview of the day. I was very impressed at how cooperative they were for her.…

Essentialism is used by many education facilities in today’s world and in recent history. This philosophy focuses on core classes and wants all Americans to have the same education. Foreign language, science, math, history, and literature are the subjects that essentialism likes to focus on. Electives are not favored in this ideology because they are believed to take away from the necessary core curriculum. William Bagley is thought to be the founder of essentialism since the 1930s.…

Essentialism focuses on a core curriculum, while existentialism focuses on individuality (Parkay & Hess, 2000). In an essentialist classroom, the teacher is an authoritative figure. All decisions fall into the teacher’s hands, and all aspects of the classroom are under the teacher’s control (Erkilic, 2008, p.2). Existential classrooms are student led, with the teacher’s primary role being to mediate and guide. Students in an existential classroom get to pick what they want to learn and how they want to learn it.…
