Let me show you how it real it gets. The winter before my senior year I had recently visited Spelman College, this motivated me. Let’s fast forward, on the first day of school my spirit was extremely high and I felt as if I could conquer the world. My friends and I walked into our classes feeling undefeatable. We decided that we wanted to start a club that would look well on our resume not thinking of the responsibilities that came with it. I went to talk to prospective sponsors that would help us start the club while also having several meetings with administration. I walked into head of administration’s office never being in a room that felt so cold and lifeless. It felt as if he was staring into my soul with his piercing brown eyes. Not thinking, who knew a Minority Student Union would bring such uproar at a 1,000-student high school in the suburbs of Mississippi. So many people came to the interest meeting and few joined. I felt like a failure and wanted no part of it, but “Mama ain’t raise no quitter”. So I continued with my original plan, which was to bring people of color together to bring about issues within the community as well as gain leadership skills. We excelled up until the middle of November, people started getting tired of meetings, officers no longer wanted to do their job and we never got much done. Drama started to stir up amongst the sponsors and students and things just were not going well. As President of the new and problematic club, people looked at me different and I had no idea how to handle it. I wanted to burry myself within my sorrows of anticipation with college applications and stress of being the best. I look back every now and then and see how unhappy I was even though it was only two months ago. Times have changed and I received numerous lessons from life. I learned that along with trying to be the best you have to accept who you are and do not lose yourself trying to be something you’re

We live in boxes. Constructed by learned perspectives and solidified by societal pressures, their existence is ubiquitous. At my school, the divisiveness of these partitions is powerful: hatred among my peers is developed from the inability to unlearn prejudices in order to understand the circumstances of others. As Vice President of Sister Cities of Durham, an organization dedicated to fostering global cultural understanding, I strive to bridge cultural gaps by giving the students in my city an opportunity to deconstruct these mental confines. From creating school-wide fundraising events for well building in Arusha, Tanzania to hosting and conferencing with exchange students from Denmark and Japan, I spearhead efforts to diversify and aid both my community and those abroad.…

Of the remaining 80 interviews, only 48 people were accepted and I was one of them. This achievement demonstrates that I am hard-working and sincere as I was able to pass both the application and the interview. Likewise, this establishes that I am highly adaptable since despite the fact that the interview was on the spot I was able to effectively display my abilities to the executives of Royal Treatment. Additionally, this accomplishment has led me to be more involved in school activities and further practice working in a real-life occupation. As club members are extremely professional with the proper attire of fully- black pants and shoes, as well as a plain white shirt.…

Brown is a place where students have the freedom to grow, learn about themselves, and enjoy life. In all my years of school there was always someone looking over my shoulder, interjecting their opinions, or spoonfeeding me the answers. I want my college education to be my own. Taking ownership of my education is a large responsibility, but I am mature enough to handle the challenge. My past laid out upon a table. My GPA, my resume, my test scores. An unfamiliar man whom I met for the first time was frowning, turning around in his creaky red chair, while hurriedly trying to contextualize my life with just a few pieces of paper. For 15 minutes, he sat there, unhappy, tapping his foot, analyzing what I’ve “done” with my life. He took a sip of water and suggested that I go to community college.…

So, Sarah and I decided that in our sophomore year, we would join at least two clubs. We joined the Club for the Integration of the Arts together. It is a club that runs our school’s coffeehouses, as well as the yearly opening of the school’s literary magazine. It was a good first club to join – great people, and really fun activities, but nothing that required work…

Finding myself in the same room I came to years ago caused me to experience again how difficult being a high school freshman was at the time. Before entering the group, I assumed the session would be light-hearted and playful, forgetting my own personal experiences. After spending a short while with the group, there was a shift within me where I began to experience more empathy and understanding of the power within the group. I also felt a shift when the members began to share about their lives, causing me to feel honored to listen to their stories. Although I was once a high school student, experiencing this group gave me a greater perspective on high school students, reminding myself of the difficulties we all experience, regardless of our…

As I am writing this letter, I recognize my chance of successfully appealing is statistically against my favor. Like many students who received the same letter, I did feel disappointed. With a beautiful campus situated a few miles from the beach, with world-class professors and a learning environment capable of inspiring students to be greater, I can understand why there is high demand to attend such a remarkable institution. From visiting the school, I see how this campus can be any student's dream school and this is why I cannot squander the opportunity to write this candid letter. I have to give this one more shot.…

KEY Club, a service and fundraising club, became my focus, and I travelled up the ranks to become the school’s external affairs manager and the service committee chair of the Eastern Canada District. As I introduced more extra-curricular activities into my life, organization became more important -- and I was shocked to see how much it helped me save…
