Personal Narrative: My Visit To La Casa

Improved Essays
What I was first able to observe during my visit to “La Casa” which is considered a head start program in Chicago, is the fact that it resembles a business. With its blue and pink-ish kind of beige looking letters fading on its store front, we can see that it has been here for quite some time. Entering the building gave me that old feeling of nostalgia of when I was attending grammar school, although technically this facility isn’t a grammar school. After speaking with the main desk and getting squared away, I was placed in Mrs. Garcia’s preschool classroom. In her classroom, Mrs. Garcia had a helper, Ms. Gamboa. At the time of my visit, the children were not present, so I asked the lead teacher and assistant a few general questions …show more content…
I was also told a good number of these children came from households with different support systems, such single-parent households, or households with grandparents and other family members. The classroom itself was very colorful and busy. Everything from the materials on the floor to the materials up high were bright colored and educational in one way or another. From the rugs with letters and numbers on it, to the toys to the furniture. The classroom was divided into different areas and everything seemed to be very specifically organized, there was paintings hanging from the windows. A couple of them were specifically appealing, one was a painting of day …show more content…
Everything from hours of business, to amount of children to be served, age range is really up to one person or those people involved in this business and its not necessarily up to a board or staff or even professionals necessarily. It seems that lot of the time the person in charge has their own children or other relatives under their care in the same group they professionally take care of, as opposed to putting them in a different classroom as it would be the case in a regular school. It also seems like in most cases, location has a lot to do with who comes to a specific home based day care. It is not odd to see that a lot of the children that are put in a home day care are placed there solely because of the location and the convenience of having the ability to drop them off there. The other important thing is also the curriculum, assuming there is one, it is also up to the caretaker and it usually is not revised or approved by a superior. Rates are also determined by one person. Also, the child could be exposed to children of different age groups, and abilities as opposed as in a center where children are divided up by age or sometimes even abilities (special ed, early intervention, language). This can be comforting for children as it may remind them of their own family dynamics. The size of the group may also be significantly different, allowing more interaction with the

The first observation I did was at the Esmelda daycare, this daycare is a family daycare there the woman and husband showed me what they did every day they said that the toddler had hours for everything like what time they eat, how much time they had to play. Esmelda daycare promote language through play time she has book that help the toddlers learn the different animal or the ABC the woman would read the book to toddler by pointing to animal or letter and saying what it was she would also promote language by playing with the toys like counting how many Lego blocks there is or by saying the color of the toy right now. Esmelda daycare is not fully completed with all the material the toddlers need they are in process, but still not being a fully completed daycare you can see that the women and the husband take really good care of children when I was there as she was taking to me if the children need something she would stop and put attention to what the children need instead of just keep taking to me and ignored the child. Compare to the second observation did where each children age group has his own in Esmelda daycare see has all the children together he also has the toy room apart where they just go play when is play time and can’t go in until is play time again.…

In the story with Jade and Anthony, they have taken their son Michael to both a family day care and a center day care because Jade is in the Army and had to go to Germany. Before she left, she put her son in a family day care, but then Anthony enrolled him in a center day care and after a period of time his son started talking more, became more social, and was much more attentive. In both a family day care and center day care there is obviously many contrasts between the two and in any situation there are many major differences and effects to the children. Both of these day cares are fairly acceptable, but depending on the parents' needs and which way they want to manage their children in, than one would be better to enroll their children into. However, we do know that both of these day care centers have some notable differences, and we already know that one of those differences is that Michael's vocabulary became more advanced after he was enrolled into the center day care, but there are still more differences between both the center day care and the family day care.…

The crisp breeze rustled my hair as I walked out of my house on the fall September day with my dad drilling instructions into my head. It was my first Little League baseball game ever, and my dad wanted to make sure it wasn’t my last. Being seven years old and never touching a baseball was something that had scared me; a lot. I had no idea what to think about this foreign, petrifying, game could possibly be about. The car ride from my house was only a few minutes away from the fields where I would begin my baseball career.…

I was 13 years old, just starting off high school, when I realized what this dark cloud that’s been floating over me for the past couple of months really is. It wouldn’t be until more than a year later until I seek out professional help. It started off innocently enough as just a feeling of constant emptiness at the pit of my stomach. It slowly turned into randoms bouts of extreme rage, where I’d take out my anger physically, not just on the walls and mirrors of my childhood home and not just on my family, but on myself. I couldn’t understand why I felt this way, why I wasn’t “normal”.…

Throughout my life, I have been the victim of several burglaries. At the age of seven, someone, in broad daylight, broke into our house and shot my dad in the chin. I was displaced to my aunt's house for weeks and missed most of my 1st grade year. When I was seventeen, I walked in on my home being robbed by some local kids. They were upstairs when I came into the house and escaped through a window, but the idea that I could have come home earlier still haunts me.…

I had the privilege to observe in a Capital Area Head Start program pre-kindergarten classroom. My nerves are already shook because this being my first time babysitting, then, as I’m cleaning up the mess that the kids have made from dinner, I hear glass shatter and an ear-splitting alarm begins to go off.
