Improved Essays
The school I chose to visit is Child Development Services (CDS) Head Start I met with Sheryl Grasmick who is the center manager. She shared many of the safety procedures with me the first thing that is noticed when entering in to the school there is a key pad in the front entrance that a code has to be entered for the door to unlock the floor is tile and there are runner mats for when the weather is bad so students and parents don't have to walk on wet tile. Sheryl said they have fire evacuation, severe weather/tornado procedure and lock down procedures in place that all employees have been trained on as well as they do drills on a monthly basis to keep the students aware of the proper procedure. For the fire evaluation students are required to line up walk outside along the playground fence and line up along the back of the fence and stay there as their teacher calls attendance to make sure all students are accounted for once they are the teacher holds up a green card showing all are safe and accounted for, there is also a white card with a red cross showing paramedics are needed or a red card, meaning not all are …show more content…
Sheryl had said they always use the same code, I feel that could be a safety hazard if someone got the code for the door that shouldn't have it they could easily get into the school. Plus sometimes there are custody issues with families of the students and if the office is made aware of a legal situation where there is legal documents saying a specific person can't pick a child up then the code could be changed so that person can't get into the school and possible create a scene or cause safety issues for the

I completely agree with you. I also felt the greatest challenge I will face will being able to receive sufficient funding. I found it interesting how you have witnessed policies, regarding funding, change without your knowledge. I'm sure it happens more often than we are aware of. My interest in child poverty persistence dates back to my childhood. Growing up in Liberia and acclimating to America as a first generation refugee, I can assuredly communicate the difficulty experiences of children from impoverished families. In Liberia, I lived in a two-bedroom tent with 10 relatives, we owned nothing and when a civil war arrived, we lost families and the tent. While coming to America, two out of the 14 relatives that applied were selected from the immigration process. My father, grandfather and I came with the clothes on our backs.…

I was ten years ago and I can still vividly remember sitting on an old, wooden rocking chair while the words of The Very Hungry Caterpillar trembled off my lips to a room full of second graders. I can recall the eagerness and excitement that filled their little faces as I flipped from page to page. There was an abundance of curiosity and desire to learn in that classroom that made me happy that I decided on skipping recess to read to the younger students. There was a fire that lit in my ten-year-old body that day. That was the day where I finally had an answer to all the “What do you want to be when you grow up?”…

14.7 million children live in poverty. I am one of them. And yet, no one seems to notice me or care. I’m just another piece of garbage in the street, just another thin, starved child that is above the notice of anyone. I wish tears could change my life, as if they could somehow wash out the hurt, and pain, as if they could drown the struggle.…

I have worked with many families in the past, and I believe I have applied some of the humility, compassion and positivity that the textbook talks about. I believe that the knowledge that is gained through textbooks and by attending classes is important as well as the skills that are gained through practice when working with families. In my personal experience, I come from a very poor family, which allows me to be humble with those families who are in need. I have experienced the separation of parents, the absence of basic needs, like clothing or food, and I have also experienced the anxiety of being undocumented. I think that as I gain the knowledge and skills, I will be able to integrate it with my personal experiences and I will be able…

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” said Nelson Mandela. When President Obama launched the Young African Leaders Initiative in 2010 to support the emerging generation of African leaders, this was to educate us to change Africa. I believe this Professional Development Experience is intended to give Fellows practical training and the opportunity to learn transferable skills, and apply theories learned in civic leadership classes in the real-world setting. As a leader, I seek to participate actively and productively in the field of global health leadership and health policy and to fill a strategic position in a multinational institution working on promoting health, particularly in Africa.…

In the Human Services field I am very passionate about working with people in the deaf culture. I am passionate about working with this population because I know American Sign Language and I feel a connection to the community. Learning ASL took a long time and allowed me to be engaged in many events in the deaf community. I believe people in this population are not given nearly as much attention or opportunities as they should be. The lack of equal access to education, jobs, and basic interactions that hearing people take for granted is not fair and puts this population at a disadvantage therefore making it important for people to want to work with this group of people.…

Surrounded by a team of nurses, one doctor, and what seemed to be a grouping of blinding lights, I had a peculiar moment of serenity. I can’t quite explain whether it was the epidural or the fact that for twelve hours my body was engulfed by excruciatingly painful contractions which seemed to be attacking me in a sporadic manner, but in that one moment everything was perfect. Somehow I just let go off every single fear I had, I just remembered that in any moment there would be an extraordinary occurrence. Although a natural part in many women’s lives, since the beginning of time, it was a phenomenon in my life.…

These were my tenth (11/12) and eleventh (11/13) shifts following Meagan on the medical/surgical floor at Rady Children’s Hospital. On Thursday, November 12th, I followed Meagan from 0930 to 2230 while she worked as the resource nurse. This was a new and different experience compared to following her as a normal nurse on the floor and even as the charge nurse. For most of the day, we watched other nurses’ patients so that they could go on break or accomplish other major tasks for their patients, helped nurses who were really busy, set up and prepared rooms for incoming patients, and started intravenous lines (I.V.s) (Meagan’s specialty). It was also an extra peculiar day because I followed Meagan to a charge nurse meeting and also into her boss’s office where we ended up talking for about an hour concerning several different things.…

As the fall semester approached, I was really nervous knowing that I was going to have to meet with mentees for duration of twenty minutes. All I could think off was how I was going to keep the conversation alive for that amount of time. And, I also had the illusion that as a mentor one is suppose to solve the mentees problems and if one does not then one has failed. Additionally, I also feared having awkward moments of silence during my meetings. Therefore, I can honestly say that it was nerve-racking going into my first mentee meeting.…
