I learned that feeling at home is something that I value very highly. I like being in familiar places with familiar people. I find that I am very happy growing up in a little city surrounded by cornfields on each side as long as I am in the presence of my family and my friends. The entire experience made me a lot more grateful for where and how I was raised. Since my trip, I have made an active effort to appreciate Indianapolis and even Indiana in general. For example, when I was in Paris, it seemed that every native person there was very rude. While the temperament of many Parisians was agitating, it also served as a subtle reminder to me that my parents instilled in me the values of respectfulness that tend to be characteristic of my midwestern upbringing.
I am incredibly thankful for my experience in France because it put my living situation into perspective. I saw that even a world away, the differences between the way in which I live and the way in which others live are quite small. Yet, at the same time, I really cherish the small distinctions between my home and a country thousands of miles away. It subdued my desire to leave a home that I so often take for granted. While I know that my sense of adventure will never be extinguished, I am comforted by the fact that I will always be able to come back to my home in
