Personal Narrative: My Uniagnosed Sleep Disorder

Improved Essays
Until recently, I had an undiagnosed sleep disorder that had a large negative impact on my school work. Through the right treatment, I have been able to stay alert, focused, and have a better understanding of my classes. I feel that my condition has made me a better student, because it has taught me how to function without treatment, that I have to work twice as hard as the average student to succeed, and that I have to persevere through every obstacle in order to achieve my goals. I have also learned that I need to act quickly and find a tutor when I feel that I am falling behind in a subject. When studying for an exam, I have learned that reviewing my notes, and asking for a classmates point of view on a difficult problem, helps me prepare

When diagnosed with ADHD, I made a choice. Not only was I going to persist and not let this affect me, I kept this affliction hidden from my peers. Strong, determined, and hard working, others saw me as invincible and were inspired by my dedication and talents. What they would not know is that I struggled with the same trials as many of them. During my second clinical appointment I arrived at the interview feeling a little less anxious than I did when I met my client for the first time. I had spent the week reflecting on our interview and conversation and the positive feelings and assumptions I left the first clinical with. I learned during our pre-conference that having assumptions can be positive as long as you keep an open mind. Throughout the second clinical I realized some of what I had assumed and felt about her and her life was fairly accurate. I got the feeling from the manner she portrayed initially, that she had been married and had several children; whom she stayed home to raise.…

From a very young age I suffered from a chronic intestinal disorder which went improperly treated until I was 18. This was resultant of the necessary medication being potentially fatal for minors. When I finally was able to start on the medication it changed my life, however at that point I only had a month of high school left and there was nothing I could do to remedy my awful grades. The reason I had done so poorly was due to the copious amount of school I was always missing as a result of this disorder; thus, I was always playing a hopeless game of catch up with my work. Prior to starting on the medication, I had lost motivation and drive in my schoolwork as I felt there was nothing I could do no matter how hard I tried that would lift my grades.…

A couple months ago I had a dream. I had a dream that my hard work in school was validated, and I got the letter telling me I’d been accepted into medical school. Later that day, I came to the realization of the relevancy of the dream; and I asked myself how my life would change if I knew at this moment that I’d make it to medical school. How would my life change if I knew I’d successfully get through all of these grueling advanced math and science classes? Going into high school, I had the impression that I would be able to get an A on every assignment, quiz, and test.…

I want to be able to follow in their footsteps by achieving my goals in order to carry on their legacy.
