Personal Narrative: My Trip To Venezuela

This happened a year ago when I was with my mom at home watching TV, talking, and having a good time together until we received a call from Venezuela telling us that one of my aunts was seriously ill. That was awful for me, it was traumatic because two days before I talked to my aunt and she was in excellent condition. My mom would not stop crying because she thought my aunt would die. We started praying every night for her to get better, but it was not like that. She got worse. Moreover, my mom and I decided to go to Venezuela and to be with our family. When we were on the plane, something strange happened to me. While I was looking out the window of the plane, there appeared a large white cross. That was something so shocking for me that

Commencing Unbound A lurid, fuchsia dress with generously powdered glitter and blaring, familiar music danced to by relatives you weren't even aware were relatives are trademarks of the traditional rite of passage into adulthood in my culture and one I never had the pleasure to experience due to my family's financial situation at that time. Familiar music playing in the background and only my immediate family sat close to the stage in awe to watch me. Graduating from my esteemed high school, Design and Architecture Senior High (DASH), was the omega to the alpha of my future. That experience both humbled me and triggered the tenacity in me to…

All my life I have wanted to go on a mission trip to help mentor those in need. So when the opportunity came to go to Jicamarca, Peru I was extremely excited to be a part of the team being shipped off. Before going to Peru we were put through a “special” type of training. During this training we were taught what we were going to be speaking about, a skit, and a ballet dance. So when we went to Peru we would be ready for anything, at least that’s what I thought.…

The booming voice called out for my little family of four to board our plane, a plane that would take us to the depths of a mysterious alien world. Or at least that’s what little six-year-old me thought when I left my home country of Cuba to come to the United States. That was a time of emotional turmoil for me, feeling the pain of leaving everything and everyone I knew behind. There was the excitement and fear of coming to a new unknown place, but there was also a feeling of dread at this vast language barrier that I was facing, and finally accepting and adapting to this new life. Coming from Cuba was a difficult experience that helped me grow and learn.…

When vacationing in Peru I was unable to use most of my technology I had. However, it allowed me to enjoy it more without the distractions. I was able to bond more with the people there and had a great time. Every year I volunteer at a camp for 3 weeks where no technology is allowed and it did not affect my attitude and did not take away any enjoyment of being at camp. I can adapt to different settings very easily mostly because I don't have much preference to temperature or foods so most people describe me as someone who is very easy going and willing to try new things easily.…

An experience of particular importance to me was when I went to Cuba. This was important to me because I met a new friend Anyelo, experienced the cultural and met nice people. One thing that made this trip particularly important was that I got to see how different people’s lives are in Cuba. There have been sanctions against Cuba since the 1950s making it so they do not have many things that we have in the US. Most of their cars are antique and have to use what they have to repair them.…

When I got to Colombia and walked into the Suba Foundation for the first time, I was instantly met with loving hugs from smiling and genuinely happy faces and children saying “¡Te quiero!” meaning “I love you!” In the United States, I could not have imagined such a welcoming and accepting reception from people that had so little. Many children at the foundation lived in devastating poverty, hurriedly driven away from their homes due to the civil war in Colombia; yet they were filled with so much joy and love, it surprised me. My first missions trip to Bogota, Colombia really taught me what unconditional love meant, and drove me to return that love in every way that I could, whether it be by teaching English to the kids or washing 200 dishes…

Although it may not be the orthodox turning point people so often read about in young adult novels or hear in motivational speeches, my trip to Colombia matured me in such a way that I have become incredibly aware of myself and of the stigmatized minorities in America. Along with being a very liberal minded millennial, I am also one hundred percent Colombiana and am finally proud to say so. Until my two month visit to Bucaramanga ,Colombia I was embarrassingly ashamed of my ethnicity to the point where I felt the need to tell anyone I met that I was half-white so I would be “safe” from stereotypical jokes. Years of ridicule took its’ toll on my 12 year old self and made me resent my culture, ethnicity, and overall self. I hated bubbling Hispanic…
