Growing up, I was always a hard worker. At age nine I sold enough newspaper subscriptions to win a bicycle in my hometown of Allegheny, Pennsylvania. It was also at that age, that I was fortunate enough for my family to travel to New York for my career. At age thirteen, I was a chorus girl and later on when I was fifteen, I performed at Pan- American exposition in the “Trip to the Moon” exhibit. 2015 was a time filled with adventure and grandeur. I can still vividly remember the frigid, icy night of twenty degrees Fahrenheit when my family and I saw The Cold Hard Cash Show in concert. This was where I was introduced to Johnny Cash’s music by Merle Travis Peterson. I received nearly an overdose of unique and remarkable music that influenced many other genres. Even with Johnny Cash’s death, his music has continued to inspire and ignite generations.…

Shermin Sultana TH-198: The Purpose of Playing Instructor: Dyan Burlingame September 6, 2017 Reflection 2: “The Dramatic Imagination” Chapter 1- 4 In my opinion, “The Dramatic Imagination” by Robert Edmond Jones is a book mostly about the author’s opinions on theatre. This book is also written about sense, expression, art, imagination and set design/stage setting in the theater. As a reader this book really helped me to create an imagination of the situations in the dramas that the author presented.…

My overall experience as a dramaturge for Fiddler on the Roof was wonderful. Doing tremendous amounts of research at the beginning was pretty difficult, because as a Hendrix student, I was required to finish all of the research during the week of my final exams. Paige, my boss, was extremely helpful, and when I mentioned I was having trouble finding information she recommended three books from the UCA library for me to read. Jeremy, my director, also knew what direction to lead me in, and I easily found research that pleased him. When I presented my research to the cast and crew, they seemed very impressed, so I think I did well.…

There I was staring out of the window; nervous and excited my heart was pounding with over 100 beats per minute, I would finally be meeting my new horse that my father had purchased for me. She looked sort of like vanilla ice cream with Oreo cookies, thats what her color reminded me of the first time I placed my eyes on her. I had no choice in choosing her name, as my father had already chosen for me, her name was Canela. I would have remembered this as the happiest day in my life; six years old and getting my new horse, well happiest day for now.…

Excitement. That was my immediate reaction when I was cast in the winter musical. Theater had always been a secret passion of mine but until this year I had never auditioned, or even acted at all. I knew I wanted to perform on stage, and with the help of theater classes in school, the director had given me a chance to prove that I belonged there. Growing up, I had always seen sports as my “thing” and never even knew theater existed or how much it would change my life.…

As more things around him started spinning out of control, all he could do for the moment was becoming a spectator in his own life. His mother took everything in stride, but his father took every opportunity to keep them all grounded from what he believed were the trappings of the good life. It seemed funny to him that the only person he actually made his effort to insure this remained true was for him and he wanted to end his relationship with Anna. That was always a very short conversation whenever his father would bring out his rigorous stick and start beating the common sense in his unknowing son. Oh, how he would bring up about the large house, all the servants waiting on you hand and foot, the expensive clothes he now wore,…

The final exam for modern 1 this semester allowed me to look at myself in a different light. Throughout the semester I have been working on memorizing choreography for myself rather than relying my peers to memorize the choreography for me. This combination allowed for me to strengthen this specific semester goal, while also allowing me to perform this piece as a solo. This paper will focus on what I saw in myself during the video exam. It will also reflect on how I was feeling while performing this piece of choreography.…

Throughout my life, I have never really had a strong connection with theater. I didn’t find interest into theater until this summer semester. Based on the readings I have read and also the performances I have seen this summer, there are many different types of theater. When discussing the content of the theater, I like seeing themes that explore overcoming some type of struggle or just wanting to be loved. The characters I like to see is people who actually show deep emotion in who they are playing.…
