Personal Narrative: My Trip To The Geneseo Public Library

Improved Essays
For the face-to-face reference encounter, I visited the Geneseo Public Library also known as the George B. Dedrick Library. I asked for information about the theft of the Mona Lisa. I was hoping to find a book or possible access to a database with articles that may have ran in the newspapers at that time. The librarian did not conduct a reference interview. I was informed that there was no information available at that particular library, I was then encouraged to ask my home library to interlibrary loan a book for me or try a bigger library. The positives of the experience was that the explanation of why she was not able to inter library loan those books for me was well explained. However, it would have been nice to have been given possible titles of books a may want to look for. The fact I left …show more content…
The University of Ohio’s library live chat feature provided me with an instant messenger reference experience. I wrote the librarian that the Mona Lisa was stolen in the early 20th century and asked when it was returned and what information is known about the theft. Again, I was looking for a book or possible information from an art or history database the university may have that a public library would not. The librarian did not conduct a reference interview trough the instant messenger. The thing that I enjoyed about the instant messenger encounter was that the librarian was able to send me links. Unfortunately, one of the links that was sent to me was Mona Lisa’s Wikipedia page. I feel that a college student who has the ability to instant messenger a library would have already looked at Wikipedia and would not use it in an actual paper. I was also sent a link to a book and was informed what library I could find the book. I was disappointed that there was no suggestion of databases I could try to find information though. This was a more successful interaction then the face-to-face encounter because I left the experience with some

Simply put, history, regardless of the specificity, is the study of why and how things happen and the Historical Society of Kent County has dedicated nearly eight decades to the preservation of this concept. The non-profit’s headquarters is located at 301 High Street –a noteworthy building, in a respectable town, part of Maryland’s idiosyncratic eastern shore. 301 High Street, otherwise known as the Bordley House, is where one can learn about the unparalleled life of Kent County. Although Kent County’s past is immutable, the society’s present and future is constantly under construction. The Historical Society of Kent County’s recent modifications to the non-profit’s mission, largely due to a change of times, was accompanied by a physical uproot…

President Barack Obama once said “When all American are treated as equal, no matter who they are or who they love, we are all more free.” As a Hispanic LGBTQ American, these words resonated with me. In my exposure to a plethora of cultures, in my personal experience and academic career, I have had the privilege to understand and further appreciate many lifestyles. Through these experiences, my mission: to serve toward compassion and respect, rather than intolerance and isolation, has remained clear. These past 8 years, Obama has been a champion for LGBTQ+ Americans.…

The book, Library: An Unquiet History, by Mathew Battles, discusses the history of libraries and books and how they have shaped the way, we as people have advanced throughout history. The destruction of books throughout history has been pretty common. The dozens of political brawls and genocides in history of mankind have proved that books are a sign of freedom that isn't seen highly by war mongering generals and power hungry dictators. Yet, Battles repeatedly explains that although history hasn't been the kindest to libraries and the people they serve, somehow, the creation and organization that libraries have created, persistently escapes mortality, to help create a new era of peace among the people.…

Benjamin Franklin once said “These libraries have made the common tradesman and farmers as intelligent as men from other countries.” This perfectly backs up my reasoning that libraries have given the world the opportunity to not be confined and narrow minded but to learn more about our world and the achievements we have made. In fact, many historians have decided to rely on books for information because they are more trustworthy and hold much more information about their topic than website. Back when the internet didn't exist researchers found their information in libraries, which have led to many of today’s discoveries and inventions.…

Last October I participated in the Dartmouth Native Fly-In Program and while I was visiting I made a trip to the third floor of the Dartmouth library. I remember this experience quite well because out of all the wonderful memories I made on that trip, this was the one experience that had the greatest impact on me. I remember walking into the library where old, frail books lined the walls with dark, mahogany bookcases stretching high. There were antique lamps on the desks that let off just enough light for one person to study under and floors that creaked loud enough to draw attention to my friends and I. We finally reached the center of the library where I saw a bronze Native American sculpture that I recognized from a museum I have visited many times here in Oklahoma.…

Our field trip to Chicago offered me a new way of seeing the city. I have been to Chicago multiple times, yet this trip offered me an experience I was not expecting. It offered me an insight to the darkness that covers the city and the beacons of light that try to shine through that darkness. It opened my eyes to those who are searching for a truth, a love and an acceptance and are finding it in so many different places; whether it is Jesus People USA, South East Friendship Center, Olive Branch, a Krishna Temple or an Islamic Mosque. In each of these places individuals are just trying to figure out where they belong and if they can find acceptance, but what each offers is entirely different.…
