Some found it easier to draw while others felt more comfortable dancing. For most of the students, music really resonated with them so they felt more relaxed in that element. Even if they didn’t dance, just listening to the music put them at ease and created a more relaxing environment. We encourage each student to at least try everything because there was a chance that they would actually enjoy what we were doing for expression that day. Nine times out of ten, that was the case.
The last few weeks, we incorporated what’s known as Playback Theatre into our Check-Ins. This improvisational style of theatre is where we ask audience members for stories of their lives and then the actors act those stories for that audience member. These stories could be as simple as telling us what they did during the week or as complicated as recounting a fight they had with their family. This allowed the kids to share something about themselves and to express how they felt about it. My peers and I would then enact the events or feelings of that audience member’s
