Personal Narrative: My Trip To The Betsy Ross Home

Decent Essays
The car ride there felt like a long eight hours. But I knew it would be worth it because I only went to Philadelphia once, and that was when I was one years old. I’m glad we left from my grandma’s house in Meadville, Pennsylvania, or else it would have taken about fourteen hours just to get there. And that would definitely not be fun. We left Sunday to get to my grandma’s house for the week we normally stay there, but instead, my mom, my sister Sydney, my brother Jack, and I left for Philadelphia on Wednesday, August sixth. My mom decided to leave on Wednesday because then we would have the rest of Wednesday and till the end of Saturday to do fun things like visit the Betsy Ross House, the exact stairs where they shot the movie Rocky, and the

As the daughter of parents who love to travel, I’ve had the pleasure of travelling across Canada and America as well as a few other countries from a young age. I have visited the loud and bustling streets of Tokyo and the ethereal gardens in Kyoto, stood on the edge of the Grand Canyon, walked the strip in Las Vegas, and watch the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean in Martha’s Vineyard. Although I should be able to look back on a childhood filled with events and memories from trips, I find it difficult to recall most vacations without a visual prompt. When I flip through old family photo albums, I don’t recall much more than what is shown in their pages. The outdated clothing, the people, and the locations are seen in the images, and therefore…

My trip to the Barnes Foundation museum was enjoyable and informative. On my trip, as we moved through the galleria I was astounded by how the rooms in the galleria were arranged. It was not like your average museum, with one or two paintings on the walls with a description of it underneath. Instead, there were rooms with paints all over the walls, along with iron work that correlated with the pieces. Our tour guide elaborated on how he did not wish for there to be a description under the pieces of art stating their background.…

Imagine a place where everywhere you look, you see beauty, everywhere you smell is crisp fresh air. Everywhere surrounding you are ginormous mountains with snow slowly melting and one huge blue body of water. When I visited George Washington my sophomore year of high school, I instantly knew that your school is where I wanted to go for college. It just wasn't like any of the other colleges that I had seen before, and for that matter it was unlike any I have seen since. I saw that GW is in a beautiful location and that its presence in the capitol greatly enhances both its value and the city’s around it. I really liked walking around the campus, as it was extremely vibrant. I saw that safety is also important, and the combination of security that holds jurisdiction in this area is extremely reassuring.…

Our field trip to Chicago offered me a new way of seeing the city. I have been to Chicago multiple times, yet this trip offered me an experience I was not expecting. It offered me an insight to the darkness that covers the city and the beacons of light that try to shine through that darkness. It opened my eyes to those who are searching for a truth, a love and an acceptance and are finding it in so many different places; whether it is Jesus People USA, South East Friendship Center, Olive Branch, a Krishna Temple or an Islamic Mosque. In each of these places individuals are just trying to figure out where they belong and if they can find acceptance, but what each offers is entirely different.…

Throughout my life, I have been the victim of several burglaries. At the age of seven, someone, in broad daylight, broke into our house and shot my dad in the chin. I was displaced to my aunt's house for weeks and missed most of my 1st grade year. When I was seventeen, I walked in on my home being robbed by some local kids. They were upstairs when I came into the house and escaped through a window, but the idea that I could have come home earlier still haunts me.…

The Pioneer House is an about 130-year-old historic building which is greenish-colored, wooden, timeworn and inconspicuous. I have visited Ballard several times so far and walked the Ballard Ave, the street which the house is located in, but I have never noticed this small –sometimes looks hidden behind trees– and old one (even if it was restored and remodeled). I was wondering what make this house as the historic one. Just its age? or is there any indigenous character related to Seattle’s…

Another Sunday afternoon was right around the corner, and I once again found myself preparing for what always seemed to be the highlight of my entire week. This was otherwise known as, my visit to the Holy Family Pantry and Soup Kitchen. The journey to this remarkable setting in downtown Columbus, is a tradition that was commenced by my Great Grandmother and eventually passed down to my Grandmother, where it would then be her obligation to include her only son (my father) in this tradition. Once my Great Grandmother passed away, my father always seemed to be caught up in the large number of tasks that his work had to offer, so my Grandmother ‘Molly’ as we called her, decided she would instead incorporate me into this tradition. This weekly forty-five-minute trip to downtown Columbus was a journey that always seemed to be chock full of a type of exuberant joy that some people are only able to experience a couple of times in their entire lives, but little did we know, this weeks ‘experience’ as Molly would…
