Paragraph My trip to Texas and New Mexico was fun and interesting. I went to Texas and New Mexico in 2014's summer with my family to visit my brother who lives in Texas, and to have vacations too. We went shopping, had barbecues, met people, went to church, and visited some cities such as Dallas, Arlington, El Paso, Ruidoso, and Alamogordo. We also visited some places like the Cowboys Stadium, Wet N' Wild Waterworld, the Museum of Space History, and White Sands National Monument. Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, author of the biographical narrative “A Journey Through Texas” written around the 1550s suggests that it is in the interest of the Spainish to continue to support exploration of the New World. He does this by showing the vast beauty of the New World and then dispelling the myths about Native's cruelty and brutality and by highlighting their fragility. Vaca seeks to dispel rumors that there may be nothing to gain in the New World and to alleviate fears the Natives will interfere with any exploration in order to secure continued funding for his goals. He writes primarily to those in Spain who would have the money and time to invest in the exploration of a country they have never seen.…

Jim swore our family could live cheaper and he’d never shovel snow again when we sold everything in rural Colorado to move aboard our sailboat in Mexico. When we sailed into Baja Sur’s capital city, La Paz, its unexpected “small town” peacefulness surrounded by the coastal beauty of the Sea of Cortez charmed us into staying. We landed a house-sitting gig by word-of-mouth and enrolled our 12-year-old daughter in a Mexican public school to learn Spanish. A two-day drive from the California border through saguaro and organ pipe cactus gardens, and only 1½ hours north of Cabo San Lucas, La Paz sits like a pearl where the Sonoran desert sand meets the glimmer of the Gulf of California.…

“Why I Chose Southwest” As a homeschooled high school senior, I am unable to take Advanced Placement courses, which are college-level classes taken at a high school. Students earn college credits by taking an exam at the end of the year. To remedy this, I decided to register at Southwest Tennessee Community College for dual enrollment classes. I chose Southwest for a multitude of reasons: to complete my high school education, to provide challenging courses in preparation for college, and to grant me college credit. I opted to take Pre Calculus, English Composition, and Anatomy & Physiology this semester.…

Two thousand five hundred eighty-seven. I could take an eight-hour flight or a casual thirty-seven-hour drive, but no matter what, I am still two thousand five hundred eighty-seven miles away from my home in New Haven, Connecticut. Being a college freshman, trying to juggle class, homework, projects, studying, sleeping, eating, and athletics; finding the travel time to go home is an almost impossible task. Add in the cost of the $600 flights round trip and there is no chance a student can go visit home when they feel a little homesick. I on the other hand had never even fathomed being homesick from the frozen tundra I called home.…

In January of last year I went on a trip to Colorado on a "college visit" with a friend and my father to University of Colorado Boulder. We left Wednesday night, skipping school both Thursday and Friday. We did go to the college and took a tour of the campus on Thursday which I greatly enjoyed, it is beautiful out there and at elevation there is very little humidity. The true intention of the trip, as important as the college visit was, was to go to Breckenridge Resort and spend the weekend snowboarding. A couple of my dad's friends were also going and we were going to share their timeshare.…

Last December, I was on my twin bed sitting by my window, blasting to Lady Gaga, when I came to the realization that I was never really me. The identity of the timid, smart Hispanic girl I had fabricated to please my English teachers in high school was not who I was. There are numerous amounts of people in the world who spend the rest of their lives not knowing who they really are, and a bigger quantity of people who hide their true selves; I was one of the few percentage who lived in denial of their sexual orientation. My whole life I rejected the possibility of fancying the opposite sex because of the environment I grew up in. In 6th grade when I was 11 years old, I was jealous of how much one of my female friends would pay attention to our…
