We left Chicago on Monday June 30th, 2014, and we arrived in Cooperstown on Saturday July 4th, 2014. We arrived in New Jersey the next morning where we would stay two nights. On the second day in New Jersey, we took a train from New Jersey to New York City. New York City was a really cool place to see with all the high-rises. We saw the Statue of Liberty, the 9/11 Memorial, the New World Trade Center, and Times Square.…
For two weeks, I stayed in Charleston, South Carolina. I didn’t know much about the place, except that I referred to it as an army town because that’s where my sister and her husband, who was in the military, stayed. I was reluctant to go, but Charleston had a lot to offer me; a new change of pace and some new scenery was much more satisfying than spending the two weeks stuck in Iowa doing the same old routine. The weather was mystical in Charleston.…
Southern Writing Project It was a cool summer's evening in the small town of HanksVille, Alabama. Ma and Pa were sitting on the front porch listening to the crickets chirp. I was in the kitchen making a sandwich, while my little sister Amanda was sitting on the couch watching this show she seems to really like called "Full Metal Alchemist. " I guess it was a sad show because she got all teary eyed when a guy named Maes Hughes died and I showed his coffin. " When I asked her why she was crying when it wasn’t real, she said "watch the whole series and you'll see why.…
Growing up, I have met a lot of people, had a lot of experiences and memories. Some were enjoyable, fun, and some were stressful, but my favorite memory was coming to America. Moving from Africa to America made me a better person and taught me to understand people better. It gave me opportunities to change my lifestyle, be around others that are different from me, and expand my education. One memory that tops all memories was coming to the United States.…
Last Summer, after 4th of July, I went back to my home state, which was North Carolina. I went down there to spend some time with my Grandparents because I haven't seen them in so long. It was so hot down there I didn't have many things to do. I told my friend who I haven't seen in so long, that I was in North Carolina. He asked me if I wanted to come spend a whole day, and spend time with him, so I said yes.…
Coming from a small town down south, opportunities were not always present. Living with a single mom of two there was never time for me to focus on what I wanted to do. The future never seemed this close, stepping into adulthood without a plan was disheartening. I slowly slipped into the wrong crowd and made decisions I wasn’t proud of. I left North Carolina in 2014 to live in Massachusetts with my dad and stepmom before continuing my descent down the rabbit hole.…
We checked out some of the shops and had lunch at a place called the Chocolate Emporium. It was really cool and most everything was made from chocolate. We all order the giant milkshakes, they really were giant. They were so big that nobody could finish them and they give you a to-go cup to take it with you! After lunch we went to check the pool out and it looked pretty good, so we went to go change in our swim suits.…
There were some positives, and I can’t help but acknowledge them because they happened and I fell for them. He was crazy about me in the beginning, I would receive text after text that it at one point was nauseating. I didn’t give him the time of day until I actually did. We were supposed to have lunch one Saturday during a weekend that I hid on Central Park South. I spend the day downtown and did things I loved.…
The day started out exceptionally. It was around 4:30 AM and the sun was just piercing through the veil of the horizon. I jumped out of bed, dressed in a long sleeve and a pair of old faded jeans and proceeded to brush my teeth as well as a long hot shower. Afterwards, as a precaution, I had breakfast because I didn’t know where we going to eat on the way to Boston. Rushing to get there already I grabbed my sling bag with my pillow, snacks and money and made my way to school where adventure was surely waiting for me.…
In second grade, my sister was in the national guard so we planned to see her for the graduation in Georgia. Just so we could be early and have more of an experience, we flew out to South Carolina about a week before the graduation, for vacation. To make the trip complete, my whole family came with so the drive to the airport was quite chaotic. When my family and I arrived at Myrtle Beach, we stayed in a hotel by the ocean. I was in awe of how it had been so placid there, for all of the people there were kind hearted and it smelled like ocean water through the entire city.…
During the end of my senior year in High School, an opportunity arose to travel to New York City, with my friend Zach. My school’s basketball team was participating in a National tournament at Yeshiva University, where my friend Zach’s brother had an apartment nearby in Washington Heights. Hearing about the safety issues in the Heights, my parents didn’t want me roaming around the city without any adult supervision. With the backing of my Uncle Richard, who live in the Upper East Side, I began to plan my trip.…
I was only a young boy, about four years old, when leaving the Netherlands. My family consisted of my sister, mother, and father. As a family we were pursuing new hope that we were expecting in America. My Father perceived America as the best option from friends and other family members who had already left. Though we were very poor, we saw America as a place where our family could get a better occupation.…
I got caught up with all spectacular things that happen in New York City. I experienced a restaurant where the waitresses sing and dance on the tables, the M&M factory and I was even able to ride in a horse drawn carriage through Central Park. I have been around horses my entire life, but this was different. I experienced horses in a completely different environment it was breathtaking. Sadly my time was cut short when hurricane Irene arrived with little to no notice.…
One memorable moment I had this winter break was a trip to New York City with my friends. We left at 8:30 in the morning from a train at the New Haven Union Station. We arrived at Grand Central Station around 10:30. It was a chilly morning in New York so we wanted to quickly walk to Times Square to browse a couple stores. There are many popular brands to visit in Times Square like American Eagle, Champs Sports, Hollister, Nike, Adidas, etc.…
I had a wonderful time in New York; it was fun from the beginning to the end. I first got ready to pack my clothes and everything that was need for the trip. I was so excited for this, I waited for this a long time and I was ready to go and have fun. We drove to the airport than we parked are car, than I grabbed two bags than my brother grabbed two and my sister grabbed two as well.
