Personal Narrative: My Trip To NEIBA

Improved Essays
It is 2014, I am 14 and it’s 5:00 am on a Saturday morning, I am just waking up to go to NEIBA (Northeast Iowa Band Association). 9 other band members will be going too. We have all been selected to participate in the 8th grade honor band. This is not the first time that I have gone to one of these associations. In 7th and 8th grade, I went to NEISTA (Northeast Iowa String Teachers Association), an honors orchestra. I knew what to expect signing up NEIBA, but the other 9 students were unaware of what they were getting themselves into.
We arrive at school at 6:30 am and start loading the bus. 3 hours later we are seated in our chairs about to start our first rehearsal of the day. We have 4, 2 hour practices and then the concert. This is going

The goal is to get first chair but this no easy task. Everyone also has the opportunity to audition for 8th grade All State. If you make it into All State you will play with the best 8th grade band members in the entire state of Iowa. I had been preparing for two months for this audition. I am determined to make All State.
It is finally my turn for chair auditions. My heart is pounding out of my chest, my palms are sweaty, and there are 500 different things going on in my head right now. Running through the song excerpts dozens times, fingering through my etude for the state audition hundreds of times. Thinking of every note making sure not to forget anything. Making sure to remember every critique, every tip, every detail. My teachers have given me the tools and now it’s up to me to use

They started handing out stickers that said “RECALL Return back at 1:25”. They handed out around 8 stickers Only 4 clarinetists could make it to state. They had handed out the majority of the stickers meaning only a few remained. Who would get it? I had almost lost all hope until the judge stepped in my direction and handed me a sticker. I am so thrilled to even receive a sticker. Receiving a sticker didn’t mean you made it into All State though, it meant you had made it through part one, but you had to go back and audition again so the judges could make the final cuts. This last audition was the make it or break it moment. You can either rise to the occasion or crumble under the

“Good luck out there. Should you need to vomit, please do so away from the piano,” quipped the competition organizer. Out of all the days I could have woken up feverish and dizzy, it just had to be March 27, 2011, the day of the piano competition. Playing the piano for an unwelcoming panel of stone-faced adjudicators when everything I saw seemed to spin round-and-round was the last thing I wanted to do.…

The percussion section of our band was preparing to lose a large number of seniors by the next fall. As freshmen, we had to prove that we could hold our own and continue to represent our section and our band as a whole with complete and utter confidence. During freshman year, we are allowed to compete in a band festival known as the Elkhorn Band Olympics. Anyone who wants to go to E.B.O. is allowed, as long as they are able to prepare a solo, duet, or ensemble. There are numerous students from the surrounding area that sign up to perform at this festival, so ranking high in your designated room is a big deal.…

As a result of continuous practice and persistence, I became the principal player in my freshman band. Before entering high school band, notwithstanding the effort, I faced financial challenges. My family could not afford a trombone or pay for band to let me continue my dreams. But I did not surrender hope, and asked my band teacher for help while my parents sought aids from my relatives. Fortunately, I could purchase a student model instrument at a cheap price and continue to play in high school.…

This past Saturday I had the great honor of attending the South East Iowa Honor Band (SEIBA) auditions, a prestigious competition where music students from all of southeast Iowa have the opportunity to undergo an intense audition process including, but not limited to, arthritis from excessive preparation, mental breakdowns, glares from judges that could kill you with one look, and sugar overdoses from their wide variety of healthy options available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the concession stands. Alright, it’s not actually that intense, but you get the picture. This day is full of excitement and nerves and disappointment as one five minute audition stands between months of hard-work and your personal goals. Sadly enough, as important…

I joined the Chorus and the Vocal Ensemble at the high school and continued to try and better myself as a musician. My music department also offered me other musical opportunities such as festivals. I have attended several festivals such as the Lakes Region music festival and the All New England music festival. These festivals allowed me to come together with other students from different schools that loved singing and performing as much as I did. Every time I perform at one of these festivals I am overwhelmed by how beautiful music can be when everyone I am working with is just as passionate as I am about the work we are doing and also extremely talented.…

Being positive can make the situation easier to cope with and can allow you to move on with life. Sometimes, it might be able to flip the situation around in the real world, as it did with my Junior Districts audition. It was late fall of 8th grade when Mr. Wright explained that Junior Districts was a program that had 7th through 9th graders audition to participate in an advanced band, orchestra, or jazz band.…

One of my lifetime goals is to become an anesthesiologist. I understand that it takes many years of schooling, hours of studying, and excellent time management to accomplish. This is my fourth year of being apart of the Weslaco East High School Wildcat Regiment but I have been a band member for nearly seven years. I have learned that being apart of a group activity has enabled me how to work well with others, discipline, responsibility, leadership, multitasking, communication skills, and shown me how to appreciate my peers and directors and treat them with the utmost respect. Being in band has also taught me that it is not just one person that succeeds a particular goal, it is an entire group that spends hours and hours working together as…
